nice dood. make sure you get some kerosene and run it on high for 30 minutes after every tank of diesel. depending on the unit and how it was calibrated, it may or may not have a lot of soot buildup inside. it's worth a teardown after a return from the trip just to check.

Diesel heaters need to run hot otherwise they'll create a lot of soot. It's actually better if they run on high heat and turn off or have a smaller unit that runs close to maximum continuously. The Eberspacher, Webasto, and Planer units have 2KW models. The Chinese units, they have some 2KWs but are actually really hard to find since they usually just build 5KW units and say they're 2KW or 8KW units by using less fuel or more fuel.

I would prefer to use a 2KW unit (in physical size and in rating) to a 5KW unit, but what we get is what we get.

    Sup everyone,

i see we are sharing winter camping with the habitat stories.. so figured id share my most recent winter camping setup.

I have been snowboarding and camping every weekend. Here in Colorado, it has been getting pretty chilly. Two weekends ago, it dropped to -4*F overnight. I don't have a heater just a down sleeping bag and a blanket. I was toasty! The worst part was trying to pack the habitat up alone at 0*F in the morning. When everything is frozen, nothing wants to corporate. I have determined that the habitat is no problem to pack up when the temp is >=15*F but below that and it exponentially becomes more of a task. After that experience, I decided to switch up my winter camping situation for these 3 reasons:
    1. Packing up the tent alone in extremely cold weather is a PITA
    2. Removing the snow that accumulated on the tent overnight is a PITA
    3. Incognito camping in Summit County is more difficult when popping the habitat
Below is my new setup (excuse the mess.. this is midproject)

**Postscript: I went to AT in Prescott and they fixed the cracks in the front corners of my habitat. They are pretty cool dudes! If you are having this issue give them a call and they will take care of you. If you arent facing this issue yet and don't have bed stiffeners, buy bed stiffeners.. it MAY prevent the cracks from occurring.

I’m heading down this Monday to get the corner stiffeners installed in my habitat at AT.

It’s those Tacoma composite beds that are causing the flexing of our habitats that cause the fractures of the aluminum corners. I have a big year planned with some amazing adventures and don’t want the those corners to get worse. I’m glad AT found a solution for this issue.

Make sure you get photos of how they install it and end product photos.

Also, are you running V1 of the Habitat or V1.1 w/ the solid panels?

I have a V1 with the two piece panels and have not had any issues w/ the corners cracking at the welds.

I’ll get pics and post next week. I’m interested as much as all of us on what the solution looks like.

I’m not sure what you mean by V1 panels. My habitat was one of the first off the line. I’m running windows on all sides, of the habitat.

For mine, they rewelded the seam and installed the L brackets they made that provides additional rigidity to the corners. Simple fix but the work of lifting the habitat and installing the brackets in the right place is the hassle. They make it easier because they have all the right tools and know exactly what to do.

Habitat is on my tundra ;) Not sure that i necessarily need them but I’d rather be safe than sorry. The tundra will still flex quite a bit.

Probably go with the SDHQ hidden ones unless there’s something else out there.

In 2016, the side panels were a two-part exterior design.

    V1.0

In Late-2017/Early-2018, AT made the switch to solid exterior design.

As you can see, it goes under the side rail support on the bottom.

I would argue v1.1 was out before late 17. We took delivery of ours in May 2017, solid panels. But that is me just splitting hairs.
