Hey My 1st Gen Tacoma Brothers and Sisters,

My buddy Sean and I have another video for you. If you have a 1995-2002 model with the IAC valve attached to the bottom of the throttle body, this video will show you how to test it and clean it.

If you have a 2003 or 2004 model, you have a different throttle body that doesn't have a screw on IAC valve that controls the air flow to the engine when it's idling.

Here's the video and Enjoy the Show!

Timmy I know I sing your praises often but I sincerely mean it. I just watched a few minutes of this vid and even down to the point of instructing the viewer to release the coil pack clip to be able to pull the throttle body off. I mean you'd think that's a given but you don't assume any givens. You're video is true instruction for even the first time noob to be able to complete and service his stuff. There isn't anything more empowering to someone than helping them see and believe they actually can do those things they've been scared to attempt most of their life. An awesome service you provide

    @Timmah!
Reminds me of when I'm on service calls(appliance repair/home repair/home remodel, etc but more specifically like a washing machine or oven repair) and I can tell the customer is a bit of a DIYer but didn't know how to electrical test or troubleshoot the issue. It's easy to see when one wants to be involved whether for learning or saving money, doesn't matter, they want to learn so I'll be damn sure to help them and walk them through the repair and they can order the part and do it or whatever. I make far less but feel much better about that customer and hopefully they can help others see they can do this stuff. Anyways, I love seeing that stuff.
    Nice work homie:D

Thanks Elijah. I appreciate your kind words. What's interesting is some people steer clear of our videos because they are "Too Long". But, which would you rather use, a short video that doesn't show much detail or a longer video that shows you everything step by step. Then there's guys that like Write-Ups over videos. This one I don't get at all because there's no comparison. A write-up is two-dimensional while a video is three-dimensional. There's just no comparison. A video offers WAYYYY more detail than a write-up. Some of our earlier work has some shaky video footage. Even when the footage is shaky, I'd still rather use that video than a write-up because somebody's finger pointing at something you need to remove doesn't tell the whole story. What tool did you use to get it off? How did you get in there with the tool? Etc, Etc....

We gear our videos to the absolute beginner because we want to empower people to do their own automotive work. I always tell people if they have the Right Information, Right Tools and possess the Right Level of Patience, they can handle most of the their automotive repair, maintenance and modification needs.

    Happy Wrenching!

That's great you do that for your customers. You're paying it forward and hopefully the knowledge you share will make it to others down the line. This is what makes the internet so awesome. You can reach so many people that you couldn't reach before. I just had a guy from Greece message us and say he used one of our videos. I've talked with people all over the world with our channel. It's pretty damn cool!

    Love hearing that my man!
Oh and on the write up preferences to videos and stuff, I understand their sentiment, Im a write up methodical step by step kinda guy, so the FSM is perfect for me. But I'm sure we are the minority in that. I wouldn't bat an eye at folks complaining about video help.
Also the comprehensive info in the video could frustrate someone looking for just a piece of the info, but who cares? Lol, they want it bad enough they'll find it in the vid or ask on a forum or whatever.
Keep fighting the good fight brother

Yeah, I guess a write-up would allow you to easily jump to a section you need help with compared to having to fast forward through a video to find what you're looking for. I use write-ups as research for our videos and I totally appreciate them. And, I obviously use the Toyota factory service manuals. It's just when I'm looking for a step by step instruction for a job, I prefer a video over a write-up. I've serviced bicycle shocks and forks this way. I repaired my clothes dryer this way. Etc, etc... The best write-up or manual still can't show you the detail you might need to be successful. They spell out the steps but there is often a BIG learning curve from the written instructions and pictures to performing the needed task.

I guess because of age I much rather just look in the service manual it is just easier for me .

Then I still think of pictures as being dropped off at the Drug Store and sent out and getting back more pictures of my Thumb.

If you could make a video doing the Pre power checks on the Miller Continuum 350 it might help my Coworkers !!

I swear you're twins with my ex father in law. Except he wouldn't even reference a manual. He's a welder/fabber and always says, if it breaks I'll fix it. I can do that. Most can't. Leave me alone. And then I quit trying to get him to a specific torque spec lmao
And he does always fix it too:D lucky to have that weld/fab ability.

    It was in jest!

The prepower check is the testing you do to any piece of equipment prior to powering up.

Since most complaints are not even close to the real problems in many cases

I actually created a video library on T4R.org and they made my thread a sticky last year. Here's a link:

Really enjoy your DIY videos Tim, and this one is no exception. I have a question: I don't yet have a substantial bench vise to hold my TB while I crack those IAC screws loose. Would temporarily reinstalling (rebolting) the entire TB back onto the intake manifold serve as a way to hold that thing while I do remove the four screws? Just a thought.

If you don't have a bench vice, maybe you can figure out a way to protect those small blocked off tubes on the top of the throttle body possibly by cutting a hole out of foam packaging block, putting the throttle body down onto the block, using your non-dominant arm to hold the throttle body steady and your dominant arm to push force down with the screwdriver and turn counterclockwise to break the screws free. I think something like this would work. This way you wouldn't have to remove the upper plenum.

I do wonder though if you turned the throttle body upside down, would the studs on the upper plenum line up with the bottom holes on the throttle body. If they do, you could certainly just bolt the throttle body on upside down and use the plenum as your bench vice. If you try it out, let me know if it works.

Let's hope that they do line up, otherwise I'll try your foam block (or similar method)...

Meanwhile I'll head out and shop for a set of JIS screwdrivers!

Just used your video to remove my throttle body and IAC because I just purchased my Tacoma and its giving me a P0505 code. Thanks for being so thorough in your explanations and recommendations. Here's what my throttle body and IAC currently look like.

I don't know you but it puts a smile on my face to see that Vessel driver in the background of that picture, being that it's likely a JIS spec'ed driver for JIS fasteners on the throttle body ;).... You make Toyota proud. Keep up the good work.:D
