i have no clue whatsoever what its like to NOT live in the crusty salt belt,or the western fringes of it lol
most definitely i have like new looking areas on my pure mid west tacoma frame too, but can only get so much off in the frigid temps every year its a battle i fight!
my tacoma has been to and seen some stuff out there, its very challenging

 

This is what the company DOWN SOUTH did for setting up the kings for me for stock height.

Is this correct?

 

It's my understanding that they come out of the box set for stock height with little to no threads showing under the collar. That's how mine came anyway and they also came from DSM. I adjusted mine for 2.5" lift which is about 12 threads showing. Any more than that and you start rubbing cv boots apart (learned that the hard way).

 

I added a bull bar, not sure I like it in black or at all. Have to sleep on this, maybe a chrome bull bar? Want to mount up some off road lights when we go out to the Everglades at night.

 

I’m not sure, I guess the collar, hopefully what they did is what’s needed for shock height adjustment plus the taco lean added adjustment

 

You can always use a punch to fine tune them on the truck

 

^^ yeah that's how I do mine, loosen the allen key plug and crank the collar with a punch. Mine came with a punch to use but the UCA makes it tricky when you do it on the truck. I can just barely make it work but it wallowed out the adjustment holes a little bit. Takes some muscle but you don't even need to lift the front end up to do it.
Helps if you spray the threads with some dry lube too. Don't loosen the allen key too much or go too fast and risk jumping threads.

Since the converstaion has gone on about this for a while... I recently replaced my spherical bearings and misalignment spacers. Photos and the process here, and it's the same for all the performance shocks, regardless of color.

Huh? If you tighten the ring so that there is less space between the ring and the lower perch, you're absolutely squishing (compressing) the spring more and adding preload. I must be misunderstanding what you're talking about/saying.

@1997tacomav6 - Stock height is a per-truck thing, since the weight of the truck plays a role. My recommendation is to put them on and then adjust them to a place where you're happy with the angle of your CVs. In my experience - keeping the height of the truck as low as possible gives a better ride; this is why I always try to remove preload from what usually comes in the mail.

And I agree with Ben on Taco lean.

 

I have the W59 tranny so keep that in mind. could be different than yours.

If mine didn't have those rubber boots, there would just be gaping holes. Yours are more of slots than holes imo.

That's a good read. OK, so you are adding pre-load to the spring, but it doesn't do what everyone assumes. That is, it doesn't compress the height of the springs when under the weight of the truck. That's not intuitive, since it does compress the spring more when under no load, but makes sense once you know it and think about it.

Instead, the lift comes from the additional shock body above the ring.

I wouldn't worry about adding cranking the coil down so long as you're not going so far as to experience coil bind, or have too much lift. Same goes for the reason you think ride is better with less 'preload'. It's because you have a better ratio of up to down travel, which is based upon lift amount, and not how many threads you have showing.

I think the other point they hit on is valving. People think their coilovers are too soft, and compensate with springs, where it really should be compensated with valving. I've upped the rebound and compression valving on mine twice now to get them to where I want, but still running the same springs.

 

Only chiming in because Ben and I were discussing ourselves and he told me to check the thread. Well said Dan, this is spot on.
