If you can’t find one highland rental is usually priced pretty decent

Yeah, the trail was covered with it. But it turned back to dirt at a certain point.

Down East is in one the Carolinas right? If that's where you're coming from im assuming you guys are planning on taking I-40 straight through? If that's the case there really isn't a whole lot near I-40 but I can make some recommendations for a couple of quick trials. If you're willing to make a detour either north or south there are more options. What kind of trails are you all looking for?

For sure here is a list of a few places, if there is something you're interested in I can give you more info on them as well and some gpx info for routes.

    Near Albuquerque I-40:
    1. Cedro Peak - Easy to moderate trail about 8 miles long usually takes about 2 hours taking your time. There are some sections of boulders, drops, a few flexy spots, and two fairly technical sections that both have bypasses.

Near Rio Rancho about 45min to the trailhead from I-40/I-25 intersection:
    1. Rio Puerco - the trails out there are pretty endless mostly through dry river beds but there are plenty of obstacles out there for a day worth of wheeling anything from easy to extreme.

Near Socorro about an hour south from I-40/I-25 intersection:
    1. Gordy's Hill OHV area - much like the Rio Puerco a lot of trails through dry river beds but also plenty of wheeling for a day+ and everything ranging from easy to extreme.
If that area seems like something you're interested in I'd suggest taking HWY 60 out of NM and into AZ. You all can drop by the Very Large Array, stop in Pie town for Pie, then continue into AZ along that HWY into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and there are some good wheeling and a few cool towns along the way to Flagstaff (Payson & Sedona).
