I’m thinking about doing it to my stock Pro with 265-75-16 tires. I don’t want to lift it. Your thoughts?

I was talking to someone at work with 285/75/16 who went to 5:29's and he said at highway speeds the rpm's are pretty high and if you're not going to run 35's then 4:88's would be ideal.

He was able to score a deal n gears and found a place to install them for a reasonable price.....it's a few grand minimum unless you DIY.

My installer quoted me 3k total for the job with Yukon gears. Ouch.

I’m mainly interested in hearing from somebody who is driving a stock truck, with stock sized tires, and 4.88s. I’m interested in how it drives and if it’s worth the investment in gears.

    I'll just answer...
Around town, you will have more torque so it will be peppy. You will get a bit more mpg around town.
On the highway, you will run higher rpms. You will get no mpg gain and probably a bit of a loss. Your shift points will change.
Bottom line, you will lose a bit of mpg. Whether it improves drivability depends on your driving habits. You will be running a high rpm at 70 mph and wish for another gear. Around town instead of 3rd gear it will be 4th. Really no help.

Look, your vehicle will still weigh the same. Your tires will still have the same rolling resistance. Your frontal area will still cause the same amount of aerodynamic drag. Your horsepower is the same. All you get is a different ratio to turn the power into torque.
    Good luck.

I’m hoping I can get the truck to stay in the deep 5th and 6th gear overdrives without it downshifting into a lower gear constantly when accelerating or going up a hill.

    Thanks for the replies.

I really don't think it's worth it, it's gear'd from the factory specifically for what your truck has. (265s, weight, etc.) Hell I run 285s on stock gearing and the only difference I really noticed is my speedo is off by 9mph

Check out the 4.88 and 5.29 mega threads. I ran 5.29s on stock tires for quite a while.

Amazingly. The way the truck should have from the factory. In my opinion 4.88 is great for stock trucks. 5.29s are better for people with 33” + tires.

Since I'm not a mechanic, what does re-gearing do? Are they re-gearing the transmission or the differential?

Better off getting the OV tune from Matt than re-gearing . Really no point in doing so, unless you plan on running bigger tires down the road.

I just went to 4.88 and got it for $1,600 out the door. It drives amazing now, stock tires and no lift. No when going uphill on my 100 mile commute to work this morning I didn't have to downshift, it held 6th gear the whole way! I was extremely impressed. I'm also running OVTune 2.0 Beta for 4.88

4.88 gears are nice and has removed the constant gear hunting out of 5th&6th gear to 4th in my 2017 OR.
I'f you are heavy footed taking off from a stop or just accelerating hard it will fly through gears quick and I even found my truck does have a rev limiter, never hit it before the other day. (Impatient me pulled out across an intersection merged onto a highway and got moving, too not make approaching traffic slow because of me).
If you drive it mellow as I typically do, it's just a nice and always feels like the power and torque are there. Every day driving I'm extremely happy with it. Knowing I can up size my tire to a 33" is nice knowing I'm geared for it. Even better than a stock tire and gear setup. Also helps when I have to pull my 12' TA enclosed trailer around.
My MPG took a .5 - 1mpg hit overall. But daily driving in town and county roads is awesome. Highway driving is where I'm happiest now, my truck can now hold 5th and 6th overdrive gears. If i'm not mistaken AT with 4.88 gears turn just slightly higher rpm than the MT stock at highway cruising speeds. With the truck not constantly down shifting into 4th I can set and use cruise control.
Installed them in October and have only wished I had done this sooner.

The 4.88 mega thread was full of good info.

I see you are in So Ca. If you are close to Corona there was a gear/axle guy off the east side of the I-15 south corona before Tom's Farm he did great gears and ARB in my 97 TJ. don't know if he is still there, but dude was good.

    It's complicated.
LOVE it. I'm running stock tires, and had my re-gear done when the truck had ~1,500 miles. I drove to Washington State to get the installation done at jusdifferentials.com. The truck drives much better than when I bought it; THE biggest difference is that the truck isn't always hunting for gears, and is much smoother. Oh, I'm also running the OrangeVirus Tunning, so that's made a huge difference as well

Spendy? Oh yes! Worth it? Oh hell yes!
