My question is whats the strongest thin-walled 21mm lug nut socket that will won't break while using a cordless impact? Or are there any impact sockets that will fit in those tiny lug nut holes?

Is there ANY reason why anyone should consder a 12 point over a 6 point socket for any work on the truck? I've found myself replacing any 12 points I used with 6 points. I think I'm covered now with the key sockets (10, 12, 14, 17. 19, 21, 24, 35) after nearly stripping a few ... but I am wondering if there are any benefits of 12 over 6 other than I guess cost -- assuming they're cheaper?

Sometimes, especially if you are working on older bolts that have been exposed to the elements, the bolt heads can become a little misshapen. Either it expands because of surface rust or becomes smaller because of previous episodes of loosening and tightening that bolt or rust has compromised the original size of the bolt head by some of the bolt head flaking off so the correct size socket does not quite work. In those instances there are times a 12-point will work when a 6 point will not.

good reference thread for when I go to buy my complete Snap-On tool set...after winning the lottery of course. Thanks.

I had an Auto Parts store guy humiliate himself trying to find me an M6 nut. I told him it came off my 2010 Tacoma. The bolt and nut were fairly rusted so I didn't expect him to have much luck threading it on his stud board. But then he moved on over to the SAE side, and I had to remind him that it had to be metric. Gave me a good chuckle and reminded me why I can't really trust those guys. I just said let me buy the M6 bolts and I'll be on my way.

Thanks so much for this list. I already used it to build out my remaining tool chest. I also ordered a nice grease gun. Now I'm having an issue figuring out which grease to buy (shouldn't this be part of the list?). I'm looking at Valvoline Palladium #2 3% Moly, Heavy Duty (HD) Grease 14.1 OZ Cartridge on Amazon. Will this work for all parts needing lubed such as u-joints, ball joints, wheel bearings? I've heard spindle needle bearings need non-moly grease but the one I listed says it's good for everything. I'd hate to lube something with an incompatible grease. Do I need two types of grease? Thanks!

Your lug nuts shouldn't break any socket 6 or 12 point, unless the socket is one of the super cheap Chinese ones, or it was over tightened or cross threaded.

One day I was at a scrap metal processing place waiting to talk to someone. I had just bought one 10mm 1/4 drive deep socket off the snapon truck. I was looking at it when he walked up. He put it on his machine that determines the alloy, he said it's very high quality. So I grabbed a few others for him to check. Matco, sk, kobalt, craftsman. It was in that order, with snapon on top, highest to lowest cost, and quality of steel. That one snapon socket was $40, about double the cost of a whole set of craftsman 1/4 deep sockets. So I try not to lose them, but they are round and roll away sometimes. Yeah they're extremely expensive. But cracked sockets often cause busted knuckles which sucks.

All of my sets are 6 point. But I have a few 12 point for some square head things.

I use Lucas Red and Tacky - https://www.amazon.com/Lucas-Oil-10...tomotive&sprefix=lucas+,automotive,188&sr=1-3

I switched a couple of years ago, and have been very happy with the results. I use it for everything.

Thanks for the heads up on Lucas Red and Tacky! From which grease did you switch and why? I've found others who like Lucas as well as Redline CV-2. Take care, Jim.

I used to use Valvoline synthetic. It worked fine, but my grease gun always leaked. I assume the moly-based grease separated over time. :notsure:

I went to NAPA looking for grease, and they happened to be out of it. The guy suggested R&T (and I have experience with other Lucas products) so I gave it a try.

    It's been a couple of years now - I really like R&T.

Thanks, Scott! Lucas is also made in the USA. Amazon shows Valvoline is made in China.
