If I get a job that needs a commuter I'll just get a prius or something. I could actually be convinced to get a cheap plug in hybrid as is. My commute is only 5 miles, I could do my commute basically under full electric. There's just no desire for that....

I've also though of an e-scooter, and work would allow me to charge it.. although it would make my ride in about 20 minutes... as they top out at 30mph or so.. most drivers on those roads drive 55-65mph.. and they're pretty narrow..

ordered my front winch bumper, now to decide on a winch.. I have a tabor 9k on my jeep atm, and can run that for now.. has steel cable, but would like to get a synthetic line if possible.. smitybilt x20 10k $450 looks tempting at the pricepoint.. but anyone have any input, prefer to only buy once. looked at comeup winches, but theyre a bit pricey $900-1400 for the SEAL 9.5's, and no wireless remote unless you go higher..

I went with the smittybuilt x20 10K with wireless remote. I haven't used it in a recovery situation yet, but it operates well. The wireless remote works well, so I'm happy so far. I won't use mine as much as some, so I figure I can skimp a little and pass on the warn tax.

YEAH, I hear mixed reviews, but for the price you cant really complain, also have to realize there are those that don't take care of their equipment, they abuse it, dont do maintenance like they should and expect it to perform beyond its design... I do like that it has the option if the battery dies to go wired... if/what did you do for a winch power isolation? a 200amp marine breaker?

Honestly I have no idea. I don't have a clue when it comes to electrical, so i farmed that part out. Now, you've gotten me wondering if I need to re-visit the actual wiring.

as far as i know it's not required, and some say that its a good bit of insurance.. so... kinda of a toss up.. i beleive most wont draw over 300A consistently.. however under heavy load they could, and this could be a good safety feature, but also a bad one... depends on you i guess.. if someone else with more experience would like to chime in...

I've used mine a couple of times and it seem to work just fine.

At some point I want to add some other things. Lights, OBA, etc... I think at that point I'll have someone do it all proper with blue sea aux panel or something. I just don't have a clue, and don't want to burn my truck down.

I saw this in another thread. It doesn't mean much to me, but it seems like you know a little more than I. It may answer your question about amps. The thread mentioned max draw at 380 amps.

While I understand it, and see the reason for it (piece of mind i guess), alongside another item to find a place for under the hood for (and lets be honest the underhood areas on the drivers side of the 3rd gens are a bit cramped as it is)... dunno looking at options for a marine breaker. looking like $25 plus the cost of a decent battery terminal.

I recently picked up a badlands 12k winch from harbor freight and was wondering the same thing, what gauge of wire and what amp of fuse should be used for it? Also want to clean up my engine bays wiring. Whats everyone using now? Still the blue sea fuse box things?

FOR A LARGE LOAD LIKE A WINCH I WOULD PUT IT ON ITS OWN DEDICATED CIRCUIT... most wont draw over 300a so i've been looking at these
    https://www.amazon.com/Cllena-Autom...NE+BREAKER&qid=1581716460&s=automotive&sr=1-6

    https://www.amazon.com/ANJOSHI-20A-...NE+BREAKER&qid=1581716596&s=automotive&sr=1-2

I would definitly look at the winches top AMP draw at max load, and give maybe a 5-10AMP margin of its max draw.. the first one is an automatic reset type, which means you wouldnt have to pop the hood to reset it, but the other type will allow you to manually trip it to do work/maintenance on the winch without having to disconnect the battery. some will get a version of this type of breaker, and use it as a shutoff for all accessory driven lights, radios, etc... up to you.. and they're waterproof, and nickel coated, so they should last a long time..
