I have one of the gamins with satellite texting in case of emergency linked to my phone, and then I use the Garmin map app + Gaia + onyx hunting maps + google maps. I usually download route files and then upload them to Garmin and use that app most of the time, but will pop into Gaia & Onyx when I either did not grab a route file ahead of time or want to take a side trail.

I wanted to get the Garmin tablet, but I think I'm going to get a refurb iPad mini instead.

Use an I pad mini and subscribe to GAIA. I have a Garmin inreach that I use to get signal anywhere ( literally anywhere in the world) to the I pad so my maps work anywhere - downloaded or not
Also the I pad mini in a rubber case fits perfectly in the center console area in front of the shifter so you can see it perfectly while driving
Having the garmin inreach is also a nice piece of mind if you back country a lot or where a lot like I do by myself. Allows you to ping the wife etc that all is good and gives you 24 hr access to emergency services if you really need it
