    I checked the u joints and didnt notice any play. I did notice that the rubber around the carrier bearing had a good amount of play.

    It should have some but not a ton. Even though the U-joints don't have any play they can still be bad. Extremely stiff to move or one spot in their articulation that's sticky or binds up. You'd have to take the DS down and check for that though, not a big deal takes like 10 min.

    Sometimes tracking down vibrations is a pita. Also kinda hard to diag. without being there can only point you in directions to check.

    Yeah just don't throw parts and money at it. Try and properly diagnose it.
