I can get a set of the new 4 runner pro style wheels in gray for under $700.00

Had some tire shops tell me don't run a 265 tire on a 7" wide wheel

They said that I should have at least a 7.5" wide wheel

They said I would have to sign a paper saying that I wont hold them responsible if something happens.

All the ebay listings says toyota recommends the 265/70/17

    Im so confused rite now

    Any tire guys out there?

That's BS. I ran 15.5" wide tires on a 10" wheel for years. And just recently ran 12.5" tires on an 8" wheel for 2 years. You should be good.

Yeah, the tire companies have a recommended size wheel for each size tire. But people regularly run MT's & AT's wider than what's recommended. It gives the tire that bulged look on the side & actually helps protect the wheel.

    Here's the 15.5's on a 10" tire...

You'll be fine. They'll also tell you you can't run a 285 on a 7.5. But how many if us have them.
I was pricing tires at discount and the said they could not mount 285s on my factory Trd wheels. I told them you do realize that's what's in there as we speak right.

The stock TRD Off-Road wheels are 16x7 and come factory equipped with 265/70 tires.

Unless you're using a specific tire that doesn't work with a narrow wheel, I'd not stress it.

Don't trust 95% of the guys that work at tire shops. There are a few out there that truly know their stuff, but the average guy who works there and cops an attitude if you ask a question isn't worth your time.

Specs and parameters are there for a reason. If everything is not spelled out and "governed" to a certain degree, people would be suing left and right as a result of the inability to think for themselves. That being said, I run 285's on a 7.5" wheel and 16.5's on a 9.75" wheel, never had a problem. Do eeet you'll be fine.

I helped fit these wheels on this car. Matt Powers formula d s14. And believe me those wheels and tires are not meant to go together. We started using 80s japanese wheels and tires like this in SD in 2002. Not to say we were the first but, he has been driving a setup similar to this for 12 years and have never had an issue related to mounting like this. I would say the specs are meant to be "interpreted" at your own discretion. The fenders will hit the wheels and miss the tires bc of the stretch [IMG]

You woke a thread that was almost 5 years old.

That is not a record, but it's an accomplishment!

    265 is 265.

The aspect ration of 65 or 70 is immaterial to the width of the wheel.

Look at the tire manuf. website, and it will give a min, mid and max wheel width for given tire sizes.

    Easy peasy.

Running into same problem you have. All tire manufacturer websites approved rim width is 7.5" - 9.5", when TRD Pro wheels are 7.0".

My truck came from the factory with 265's. I've upsized from 265/70/16 to 265/75/16. But the width of both tires is still 265 mm. The 75 vs 70 just means they are a taller tire which has nothing to do with tire width.

FYI the 70 and 75 are percentages. With my 265/75/16's the distance between the tread and rim is 75% of the tires width, or 198.75mm. The distance between 265/70/16's would be 70% of the width, or 185.5 mm. The 3rd number is the diameter of the wheel.

Thanks for this thread. I’m running into the same issue. I have Michelin LTX AT2 tires. 265/65R17. Recommended rim width is 7.5-9. I have an opportunity to get the 4Runner TRD Pro Wheels but they are 17X7. Will these tires be okay with a 7” wheel? Thanks for any advice!!!
