Thanks, OP. And thanks for the awesome write-up. That's the kind of work that keeps the forum a valuable resource. Entertainment is good, too, but we do need a good mix!

Great write up! One question for you, does part number 84250-04040-C0 include the the wheel controls and wires etc or is it just the black trim that you are getting?

I agree given it includes everything the price isn't bad. Do all of the wheel controls light up in green when the headlights are on at night?

We regular cab owners get no love. Toyota has seen fit to delete from the wiring harness all of the wires that make up the "convenience package", which enable the steering wheel audio controls among other things. This forces us to be very savvy in order to use those options (i.e. steering wheel audio and/or cruise) that are already in the truck except for the wires and buttons! I did quite a bit of research to gather the steering wheel audio controls wiring information and put it all in the pdf below as a gift to my regular cab brethren. ;-) I did do this install and it worked perfectly on my 2014 Regular Cab 5 lugger. If you can afford it, I recommend doing the steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, backup camera, and intermittent wiper control all at once because you have to keep taking the same things apart to do them individually (like I did).

PING !! Ya got my attention. I have a 2006 OR Access cab with cruise, but no control buttons. My read above is that I should NOT use steering wheel or buttons newer than 2013?

It might be a moot point as I'm updating my aftermarket head unit to a new Pioneer W8500NEX using MAESTRO Rr and TO1. Flashing the firmware to specific model ranges is necessary, When I use my 2006 model, they ask for either the OE radio buttons or the combo radio and BT button wheels. If I choose the generic "I don't see my steering wheel" they default to "ask your I-Dat-aLink Maestro dealer. I'm primarily of a mind that I could choose a later model, then chose the correct updated steering wheel and it would work fine. My concern is that perhaps some of the inherent digital gages Maestro provides that are fed by the OBD might not work correctly as our earlier models might not have followed more current OBD rules/process/data format.

Please let me know what y'all think first about whether I should use a 2012-2013 buttons/wheel, either on its own merits or MAESTRO considerations (I'm going to ping them as well).

Second, where is this possible pre-wired plug in the radio compartment? I have my center dash and console dismantled for the new HU and some other mods, so it would be real easy to check. I heard far left corner, but I don't remember seeing anything there.

Talking about pre-wired, the switch panel to the left of the steering wheel, where my fog lights and inverter switches are, also have a couple of wires behind a switch right below them.

Yesterday, February 19, 2020, I installed a 2013 Highlander wheel in my 2006. It was much less expemsive than TComa steering wheels ( $175 + shipping, including aurbag and cruise). I also used the upgraded clock spring.

So far, all the volume, mute, search buttons work.

I have 2013, installed new pads, very simple took 15 mins. Very easy upgrade should have done it 5 years ago...

One question, not all the right "UDLR" controls work on my OE 57090 Entune Premium stereo.

Is it required to get a 2014 and up spiral cable or do I have to trick out some add'l wires to the HU to get full functionality?

If you already have the steering wheel controls and you want to just install the black controls in place of silver, do you need to pull the entire steering wheel?

Hello everyone, new forum member and new 2014 Tacoma owner. I've got a regular cab basic model. I have preformed this mod with the suggested parts, it went well with no problems. Apparently my truck is not compatible with these parts. Volume buttons on the steering wheel don't work, upon pressing the right or left scan it scans the presets but never stops. When the headlights are on and you turn them off it starts scanning again. The radio head is an OEM unit. Any ideas, different parts? Thanks for your help.
