Many thanks Bill. I went to the Toyota dealership in Phoenix and the technician said they would have to take my seat apart to remove the headrest and that it wouldn't be covered by my warranty. Needless to say, I told them that I would do it myself. Easy peasy Japaneasy....

I tried a 1x4 board after getting white knucked trying to pry out my headrests from my 2012 Four Door TRD 4wd.
It scares me to think what my next step would have been if I hadn't thought..."better search the web JUST in case I'm overlooking something."
Duma$$ me learned that not only had I put the headrests in backwards [probably have done both ways], and ALMOST run some WD-40 down the chrome steel shafts thinking the poly material down inside the seat may have decayed and adhered to the posts,,,,that,...the screwdriver trick into the tiny 'other hole' WORKED LIKE A CHARM!
It seemed logical to me...BEFORE I tried it, that the push button base on ONE of the gromets would be all I needed. Well it probably IS if dummy don't put the headrest in backwards : )

Thanks for this forum. SO GLAD I checked here before TEARING MY TACOMA SEAT UP!!!!

As Homer Simpson says - "D'OH!"

The side that does not have the release button. Not at my truck now so I can't help with a pic.

Pull your other head ready out so you can get an idea of what it is you are looking at/for. It is the spring loaded mechanism that sticks out when you look down the hole (again, the side without the release button).

Yeah I looked but I don't see what to push on? There is a black lever but looked pinned in and everything else looks similar. When you can if you don't mind could you please send or pm a pic? I can live without fixing it for a day haha
    Thanks for the reply

Well, I went out and looked, and couldn't see anything either. I know I had this problem long ago (my boys did it), I only vaguely remember seeing this thread, but I don't recall exactly what or how I did it.

    Sorry.

I don't see anything, but I guess just try putting in a small screw driver and see what happens :notsure: just be sure to put it on the side that doesn't have the button. Good luck.

On my truck, both of the regular release buttons are on the left side of the headrest (looking at the front of the headrest. The emergency release is on the right side (on the inside of the hard plastic support). This makes it annoying, since the headrest will cover the release hole. I used a long TV repair screwdriver, so I could push it into the hole

Look for the small square hole (see pic)
Stick a small screwdriver in the hole
Push in on the screwdriver (don't have to push too hard)
    Lift up on the headrest

I Just did the same thing and started to panic when I couldn't get it out. Went right to the computer and entered the problem. The Tacoma World site came up and the first post showed the trick! Thanks for making it easy and save a night of frustration! Great Site!

Not a single person recommended using a highlift jack under the headrest. TacomaWorld, I'm very disappoint in you.

My wife switched the passenger side in my truck on purpose, says the headrest bends her head forward too far and gives her a headache.. Drives my OCD crazy, but I also know that I wont win the resultant argument if I fix it.
