A lot of people believe they are missing part of the story, based on how we use these trucks.

 

Won't water start coming into the interior of a Tacoma by the time the water's high enough to screw up the engine?

 

I watched a taco on hells revenge at Moab have this issue. (Maybe it was hell’s gate?) But he still got through it without much trouble

 

Its not about how high the water is its about where the water gets, you would have to be sitting in high water for a while before you would start to see water come into the cab

I got a good laugh reading his article. Seemed pretty clear to me he hydrolocked it due to being at a steep incline for a long period of time and the engine sucked oil through the pcv. Hell he even admits it was that way for 3+ minutes. I've offroaded a good bit and never have I been at such an incline for 3+ minutes at a time. Like someone else posted above, a catch would solve this "issue". Toyota likely doesn't specify water depths for liability reasons. Dudes like him are the reason there are dumb warning labels on shit.

 

What a rough life, quit your job, buy a new Tacoma to go driving around the country.
This man makes poor life decisions.

 

Such a cheap kit, you would think Toyota would just solve the problem on all of them once and for all. If it costs us $150 for the average consumer it would probably be a third of that for toyota. Why wouldn't they just include it on all of them.

I think he had an extremely bad case of oil pooling or starvation that the dealership blamed on hydrolocking. I can't say the guy was right or wrong and screwed the pooch with something he did. But I think the 3.5L did (or does still?) have an issue on inclines and it would not surprise me if corporate or the dealership jerked him around, too.

Toyota fucked up not having our backs with off road usage, the dealership was probably being douchey as usual, maybe... but the guy was unhinged. It was 360* of Shitty.


That’s why most of us KNOW going in, that we might be shit out of luck if we blast through certain trails. This is the way.

 

Mostly because the average consumer isnt taking their truck up 40+ degree inclines lol.
