Approach/Departure Angles

Silly question, I see charts on the interwebs about what/where to measure, but how do you calculate the actual "angle in degrees"?

to me the departure angle looks higher than the approach so I'm not sure why or how they got those angles??

@ovrlndkull I'm not good at math what so ever, barely passed algebra back in 1993.....

 

I would imagine you can take something long and straight and stick it from your back tire to your back bumper. Put a magnetic angle finder on it and wham bam. I haven't tried this though or put more than 30 seconds thought into it, so I could be wrong.

 

Fiat enginerds not drawing anything to correct scale you also don't know what they are measuring to on the vehicle

I wonder if this would be a more accurate place to measure since that's the widest point in the tire. Makes sense for the front at least, since the middle of your tire is what will be hitting the rock first. Like pizza rock, I can drive right up this thing since my approach angle is so good, and every time it blows my mind a little.

 

If you have an iPhone you can use the measurement app to find angles. Click ‘level’ at the bottom of the screen and it goes into angle mode when held sideways. Used it for finding the angles for the beds stiffeners I’m making.

 

In reality the angles are fluid depending on the terrain, obstacle etc. They measure from the point of contact with the road because that'll give you a clearer idea as to the approximate. But you are correct in a manner of speaking. Plus who cares about dragging bumper or scraping to get up something just power through it.

Angle finder + plywood sheet. Just measure the ground (if it's not level) and subtract the measurements.

 

Break over angle is not quite what you are looking for but interesting still.
