Softer Shocks & Coils for Lifted Tacoma

Hi all, I lifted my 2010 Prerunner Xtra cab a few months ago using the Pro Comp K5075B lift (2") and paired it with BFG AT KO2's (white letter out) on stock rims. The truck looks amazing and is exactly the look I was going for. All that being said, the ride is pretty brutal. I feel every wrinkle in the road and get almost no travel out of the front coils/shocks. I've aired down the tires to roughly 30PSI and that helped some, but still not much. I know the E rated tires arent doing me any favors, but the front shocks and coils just seem WAY too stiff/heavy duty for my truck. (The rear AAL actually feels OK).

I'm at the point where I'm considering swapping out the front coils and shocks and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on a much softer setup. I do mainly street driving with some forest road travel once per month. Obviously the Pro Comp was a budget option to begin with, so keep that in mind with your suggestions! Trying not to break the bank on this! Thanks for any insight and assistance!

Contact @HeadStrong Off-Road. They can probably suggest some new coils to try. I went 5100s with OME 887 coils from them and couldn’t be happier. They’re very knowledgeable, I called and talked to them on the phone before placing my order to make sure it was what I needed.

You'll probably get a lot of suggestions for Bilstein 5100 shocks paired with some type of lift coil -- but almost all the lift packages setup for 2nd Gen Tacoma's are for a Double Cab Short Bed (DCSB). My point is that your Pre-Runner has a curb weight 400 lbs lighter than a DSCB so what works for *most* people may not be good for you.

I went through this same scenario a few times with my regular cab 4x4 and ended up with a pair of Dobinson coils with a light spring rate, paired to some Bilstein 5100's. I'll also reccomend Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road as well because they are straight shooters and good to work with!

Yeah, I'd bet it's maxed out in the front and you just don't have any down travel and can't compress the front coils with the lighter vehicle

 

You should just use a spindle lift.

Reinstall your OE coils and some decent shocks, like 5100s on 0 setting

Thanks for all the feedback. Unfortunately my OE shocks were toast so they had to be thrown out.

CrikeyMike you hit the nail on the head that there’s no down travel. Any suggestions on what coils would be a better option? I went on the Dobinson website and there are several different coil options. Would you recommend new shocks as well?
