So I’ve had my truck since 2016 brand new from the lot. I’m well aware and experienced all the 3rd gen auto shifting weird shifting behavior like the hunting etc. Since I’ve installed 285s , the transmission sometimes gets stuck in 4th gear and won’t want to upshift unless I manually shift it to 5th using the sport mode. It did this with my 265s but less often. This happens maybe 2x times during trips in the city , no highway. Any ideas? I do plan on re-gearing to 4.88 or 5.29 soon. Maybe that will correct it?

2018 SR5 4CYL Auto 4X4 stock tires and rims: just drove it yesterday ~180 miles on the interstate. No gear hangs, no excessive down shifts, no hunting: driving in "D".
    One data point.

I’ve had this happen on my 2nd gen 2.7L with a 4spd auto. It gets stuck in 3rd. It seems to happen when starting from a stop going downhill. There is one place I drive frequently where it happens every time. You should see if you can recreate it and if it only happens in certain situations or in a particular spot of the road.

It's likely your tire size, they are throwing the shift point out of whack. Re gearing should help, putting on bigger tires is like shifting in to an overdrive if you had one, if your upper gears are over driven already it makes it worse.

Don't listen to him, so far he has told people he has a 2017, or 2018, or 2016 (year keeps changing) and that he has had the transmission replaced a gazillion times for whatever reason.

As for your issue, I think it's just a gearing issue, not sure if regearing would solve it but it wouldn't hurt to help alleviate some stress. Path of least resistance would be take it to the dealer and see what they say. Just be sure you can recreate it

In my experience, Toyotas just have weird shifting patterns. Sometimes they hang a gear too long. Sometimes they shift too soon. I wouldn't think much about it. If it hangs, just let off the gas then get back to it. It usually will shift. If not, manually knocking the shifter down a gear then back up will make it shift. They are just weird that way.
