Yes. Lugging can cause damage so if not doing that your fine. Just downshift.

I know your feeling about 4 cylinders. Drove built up 400+whp turbo 4 bangers. No cruising low rpm. Got my v8 CTS-V and I can actually accelerate at 1rpms in 6th without downshifting

IDK why you would want to run it at that low of an rpm . 35 mph forth gear should be good .

Been years since I drove a mt in a car. I’ve never paid much attention to numbers, more the sound of the engine. I do drive a 10 speed semi, shift it by engine, they won’t exceed certain RPMS, in lower gears, to low of course it gets jerky. Listen to your motor you will get a sense for the sweet spots.

Ok, just had to go for a short drive - had to, not for testing purposes, haha!

I'm fine driving at 11 mph in 2nd, still got some pickup. I don't think I'd go much lower than that. When I am in 6th at 35 mph and want to accelerate I absolute have to downshift. 4th feels right.

Thanks to all you guys chiming in, it's all appreciated. This forum is crazy responsive!

Mileage. I get 22.5 city the way I drive. Just want to be sure I cause no damage.

I did drive by sound in my old car. But this one sounds very different. I am sure that within a few months I won't look at the numbers anymore.

Gas mileage. It's why autos have surpassed manuals. They have 6 to 10 gears and always keep you under 1500rpms. I even can feel my auto Tacoma lug it keeps rpms so low.

I recently started playing the gas mileage game so I find myself doing things like 35 mph in 6th. Seems fine to me. When not playing the mpg game I'm way up in the revs compared to most I think. The first digit of my speed is usually the gear I'm in. Gas mileage is significantly worse that way but you have decent power immediately available at all times so.

4th is my around town gear for 35-40mph. 2nd gear is usually good as 10mph engine will growl at 8-9mph though. I like to keep engine rpms around 2000rpms.

WAY below that in 1st before I go to second, like 2-3mph. I think the term is 'short shift'? What I do is keep it in 1st for a minimal time, then use 2nd to accelerate. Compared to my previous cars, 1st really only seems to be there to get going. Also, when in 4LO, I always in 2nd. 1st seems overkill for the 'off road' I am doing.

Anybody know if the ECU has anything say with a MT? Or is that strictly automatic business?

Although this really won't do any harm to the engine unless you try to accelerate at that RPM I prefer to keep it in the 1500rpm area so I have some acceleration and deceleration from the engine. This provides speed control when needed.

if you want to talk MT ECU watch out, but yeah you are in the right place.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...anual-transmission-engine-ecu-reflash.515734/

first is very low because it's a truck, and if you are towing or hauling a tall first gear may be necessary.

Now you're opening that rabbit hole.

Short shift generally means that your getting out of a gear too early for the acceleration that you want. Basically, are you getting deeper into the throttle in the next gear? If so, maybe stay in the earlier gear a bit longer. For me, the next gear will use about the same amount of throttle or less than the previous. So, I feel that I am hitting the level of torque that I want.

Yes. This ECU is different than the AT ECU. We have odd functions like Rev Hang and some other oddities that some say do not suit the MT crowd. Later year 3rd Gens are better, but we still see folks saying that the factory tune lacks in several areas.

    I tri
3mph is literally idle speed in 1st which is 500-600r and you are cutting your engine rpms in half by shifting that early. I’ve gone 5mph before in 2nd and the engine did not sound happy.

How difficult is it to add a oil pressure gauge?

Hook up an OBDII reader and use an app that had live view. Oil pressure will be in there.

I may be getting into this too deeply for now - into the rabbit hole, yep.

Low 1st for towing makes total sense. I am not going to do any towing as far as I can predict except maybe for my voluteer (SAR) work and in order to get others out of trouble. The bigger SAR vehicles I have driven are all automatic, so I didn't notice any different gearing. I think I am going to stay FAR away from any modding until I know a lot more about trucks. So far I am just a happy customer and it's not a good idea to second guess happiness, is it?

I have to repeat - I am super impressed with the responsiveness of this community. I've been on forums for many years but I have never experienced so many useful, helpful posts in such a short time. You guys are good!

I am not familiar with the Scangauge 2, beat bet it to scroll through the settings and see what info is available.
