Its a nice bike, so I worry about the 10 minute pit stops where it is unattended.

I use this cover, which masks about 85% of the bike. The lower part of the tires/rims still show, so its obviously a bike.

    https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Bike-Out...ocphy=1026990&hvtargid=pla-421631594521&psc=1

Is there any kind of aftermarket or DIY solutions that I could turn the factory D-rings into something more substantial? Or, i could use the bed mounting holes or track rails to add a beefier mounting point?

I see no point in buying an expensive heavy chain to lock the bike if I am just passing it through the flimsy factory cleats or D rings.

Okay, then buy this and replace one the flimsy factory d-rings.

Let’s us know how it works out!

Here is a picture of the Thule locking mechanism on my bed rack. I feed the snake lock behind it. Thule sells most of the peices on their spare parts site for cheap but the clamp part that goes in the rail is a special kit for the Tacoma and I don't see a way to buy it unless you get the whole set of 8 clamps which is like $65. It works great though.

This is the low cost best solution here. Get different D rings

I just lock stuff to my Bed Stiffeners. Maybe not the cheapest way to go, but they serve another purpose also.

Thank you - this seems like it would work well. Pass a heavy kryptonite chain through this heavy D-Ring.

How do I install these? I don't want to have to drill new holes into my truck bed. Hoping for a solution that uses the existing mounting holes in the bed. Thanks again.

you're overthinking it. The steel cable through the D-rings and wound through the frame should be more than enough for a 10 minute stop. You can even use 2 cables. you can make a relatively simple setup fairly complicated to deter a snatch and grab. If a thief is going to try and take your bike, he doesn't want to sit there trying to untangle it for more than 5 seconds in the middle of the day and then run away having to carry it.

I have heavy duty D rings that I mounted through the bed bolts that I lock my quad and ramps to when I go wheeling. you would probably need a sawzall to cut through them.

I am very interested in your setup - what D ring product did you use and how did you install it?

    Any pictures?

    Thank you

I have At The Helm bed stiffeners that have a beefy hole on the bottom. That's what I lock mine to now. I just took the D rings out when installing them.

bought them from Mercedes there just the d rings out of a sprinter van. Way more stout than the Tacoma ones in the corner of the bed.

You can order them directly from Mopar here for $3.48/ea + shipping. Just search for '2005' 'Sprinter Wagon' and use part # 05104500AA.

I believe that's the part number that link doesn't work anymore tho so might be superseded

Truck cap , husky liners, deflector shield, ARE truck cap.
If you have a trailer hitch get a bike carrier and lock the bike to it.

You'll need to unbolt your selected OEM D-ring and install it there. Go to your local metal shop where some worker can weld the new assembly to a steel plate so you can anchor it down like your OEM. He (or she) might try to talk you out of it, but if this is what will make you feel more secure, just say "this is what I want."

Or say "it's to chain down my dog, which broke one of the OEM's already!" He'll be telling the story for years...

    Is this the part?

    https://www.moparpartsoverstock.com...R--RING-RING-RETAINER/6674633/05170492AA.html

They are much thicker/stronger the the tacoma factory d rings, and just bolt into the existing bed holes without any new drilling needed?

I'm thinking of going this route, but not sure what slotted blocks to buy that work with the accessory rails and match the threads of the U-lock

I ended up going with one of these (https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-...eywords=snake+lock&qid=1585327595&sr=8-3&th=1).. through the D ring and through my frame.

I put the cable behind the passenger seat when I am not using it and it's quick and easy to get out and lock my bike down if I need to run into a store after a ride.

Like most people said, if someone wants your bike and they have some tools they're gonna get it. Most people will be deterred seeing any type of lock on your bike imo. And as a precaution, look into adding your bike to your auto policy!
