I have an 02 tacoma pre runner crew cab 2 wheel drive with the e locker. Bought it from my uncle its been sitting for a year or so had the rear diff leaking from the cover typical problem but was makin no noises when parked and hasnt been driven. Now i got the truck from him and its is making a knocking sound sounding like its coming from the diff. But when driving i can feel it through the floor at my feet. Cant seem to figure out what it could be. Im not a mechanic by any means but am somewhat inclined in it. The sound only happens when i accelerate and get up to speed it kind of drowns out also occurs on decelerating.

I'd get under it and grab the drive shaft and see if you can make any of the universal joints clink or have any play in them. I'd change the title of your thread from help, to something like drive trains issues. Help is usually reserved for someone that's broken down somewhere and needs "help".

Ok i will change it. And i have gotten under it and the driveshaft seems good, theres not an excessive amount of play or anything like that from what i can tell.

I'm going to assume that you checked the fluid level in the rear end.that's one of the first things you should check , and if it's been sitting for a long period of time, maybe change the rear diff oil. just a suggestion.

Yes when i bought it it had been sitting for a year in my uncles driveway with a slow leak in the diff. So when i got there it was empty i filled it with fresh fluid and drove it about 20min. Home where its been sitting since so i can work on it and fix all the other stuff going on. Then i drained the fluid and cleaned the diff so i could jb weld the bottom of it where the pinhole leaks were. Then filled it again. But still has sound. Thinking about just pulling the 3rd member out to check the gears wednesday just to see if a tooth is broken or something.

Mine truck made a clunk when pulling off and coming to a stop. It turned out to be axle wrap. I got some leaf spring helpers and that fixed it. It almost felt like it could be a transmission or diff clunk but it just turned out to be some old, worn out leaf springs. The helpers are a cheap fix until I get an OME setup.

Here’s the link to the helpers if you’re interested: https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/283604347728

The sound is consistent though as i speed up and slow down the sound never really goes away. I thought maybe driveshaft at first also but everything feels good. Theres no excessive play or anything.

Keep digging around in the diff; if the leak was bad enough for the diff to be empty :)eek:yikes!) and the tacoma sat for a year --it could be the bearings have rusted (if the oil leaked out, moisture-laden air can get in). Broken teeth usually create a metal paste -- did anything like that come out when you flushed it?

Yeah the leak was super slow but over a years time of sitting obviously it was empty by then. And no sludge but when i flushed it there were just metal flakes. No chunks or shards or anything crazy just super thin flakes.
