Have had the same problem before. I just keep a rat trap zip tied on my fuse box next to the battery. Have harvested a few Norwegian woot rats. No damage since. Good luck !!!

Rats also chewed up my wires on my 1 year old Taco, took it to Toyota and they contacted my insurance. $2k fix so insurance took care of it.

Awe man that sucks . I can totally relate but luckily I caught them soon enough before they did more damage. Yeah I'm up on Clairemont Mesa and have a fruit tree that has brought rodents to my wrangler, tacoma, and sports car. Out of the 3 they only chewed through 1 wire on the Tacoma and I repaired that. I do know that usaa does cover the repair of the engine as they have covered it in the past on my parents cars.
Since the issue with my cars started last year I have traps set out but the bummer is i can't use poison due to my dogs being around and I have to hide the traps.
So I ended up cleaning out the engine bays on all 3 vehicles and have been running this rat repellant device on the vehicles and they haven't been back since. It has been about a year now without issues.

If the rats didn't get into the wire harness then the damage is all superficial. File claim (if it won't raise your current rate), pocket the cash, get new filters, clean and disinfect yourself, and look deep into rodent repellant.

Though this does not stop them 100%, I second the suggestion of leaving your hood up. I live in the boonies, and I routinely deal with rodent infestation from time to time. Leaving the hood open has had a big impact on discouraging them from camping/nesting, which is where the real damage usually happens.

Have heard some success with these. Glad to hear it has helped you.

Yeah it definitely surprised me that it would work but was worth a try. Like I said. It is working on all 3 cars that were attacked.

I would go all out nuclear with a trapping program and bait stations around my house.
But that's my line of biz and easy for me to say.
Rats are tougher and smarter than many think.

So question, how long was the vehicle parked?

They always tell you that. The fact is. Even no fault claims can raise your premiums. Usually not much, but it still happens all the time.

Simple solution to prevent this. Stop by your local sporting goods store and buy coyote urine. Every few months put a few drops along the fender wells under the hood. You won’t smell it, but it instantly stops rats, squirrels and chipmunks from nesting there.

Someone told me when I was paying for a new injection harness for my 17 at 4,000 miles.

    Yes it really works.

My friend got one of these gizmos and the problem for him has been solved. He has an expensive collection of cars and the damage can be expecially devastating.

They don't like light - so get one or two of these - leave it in the truck during the day to charge up then turn it on in the evening
in the engine bay, or under the truck. People do that out in the desert seems to help. I should pop the hood on mine tomorrow and
    just have a look-see myself.

Claim it. I had squirrels mess up wiring on prior dodge vehicle left outside for a month. Didn’t notice until I got in to start it. Critters destroyed spark plug wires under hood and wire harness along rear of gas tank with a few other chews here there. Mechanic found wires chewed I didn’t even see. Took it to local garage and insurance covered $1100 bill. My Tacoma has been kept in safety of garage.

Are you going to park it in the same spot as before? Are they going to come back? I'd say you need to deal with the rats fuckers and claim it asap

Neighbor had his wires chewed through on his 4-Runner, in the garage.... But he fed his dog out there too so that is probably what attracted the fkers to begin with.
