its a form factor that never really took off due to the limited space for NAND and controllers. Could only go so big size wise (GB wise) before youd take a either huge performance hit or a huge price hit. But i do have a mydigitalssd in an external enclosure that we use to keep some tv shows/movies on for traveling and its worked fine for a few years now being tossed around in a suitcase/backpack.

Is there a particular reason you want a 2.5 and the 2242 drives? I'd personally just go with one 2.5 drive

I always like having multiple drives in my machines :notsure:

Seemed like everyone was going for M.2 drives at one point. I can see the 30mm and 42mm being tight on space, but larger sizes seem to have plenty of room. I was surprised to see how much of my 2.5" Samsung 840 Evo was empty space.

The ultra short M.2 versions are taking off in OEM builds. A lot of the shorter SSDs are used by OEM's because they can save a little money and get good not great performance out of the drive by cheating around the need for a cache or even multiple NAND chips. The way they do it is by eliminating everything but a single NAND flash chip and controller from the M.2 board. They move the cache into the ram, basically creating a virtual cache that borrows memory from the OS, which allows for the cacheless SSD to perform almost as good as a cache SSD. That is why the smaller slots are found in some laptops but not easy to find aftermarket, the shortened M. 2 cacheless sorta cached drives are basically a proprietary technology. They aren't available to the retail level because they don't work right without the right BIOS/Firmware to make the system ram act as their cache.

Here, Linus explains it better lol. This is a super small version Toshiba released but the 42mm version is available from other manufacturers.

With my rack in place, computer Folding@Home overnight and the closet door open, CPU temps are sitting right at 108/109F. Shutting the door to see if it creeps up.

Isn't that a little toasty? I try to keep temps below 90°C when maxed out.

Edit:. Nevermind. Didn't realize your temps are Fahrenheit. Who uses Fahrenheit to measure CPU temps?? :D

That seems really cool for folding@home on any rig. Are you sure you're pulling the highest temps from the run? Those seem more like idle temps.

It's not a high end rig but it's pegged at 100% on all 4 cores.

Those temps seem good. I had a phenom II 965 OC'd to 3.9Ghz that ran a little hot. I don't remember the cooler I had though.

Are you sure Everest is reporting correctly? I dont remember any AMD chips running over 1.5v stock. And the RPM on the cpu fan seems off too...;.then again I'm assuming you are just on air :)

But temps seem to be around where I remember the Phenom II's to run. If I remember right they all tended to run pretty cool under loads but also had a (by modern standards) low thermal ceiling of like 60-70C.

The voltages all seem a bit suspect. Do you have another program you recommend, I'd like to graph the temps really. Yea air cooled, 2x noctua 80mm up front pulling in, and a noctua Nh-l9x65 on the CPU

Oh it's a Phenom II X4. Okay that makes more sense. I thought it was a 6700K or something like that. I actually just retired my old Phenom II 945 at my inlaws place before all this Covid-19 business. They never ran very hot but as someone mentioned they had a really low thermal ceiling.

I always use HWMonitor simply because it will log max values which is all I really need for data logging.

My 3950X in it's new case levels out around 78c using all cores at 100% load after several hours. The 3950X is a beast to cool if you use it to its full potential over long spans of time. HWMonitor shows a draw of almost 200 watts under those conditions with PBO engaged.

Looks like the hwmonitor is reading the fan rpm better, and the CPU voltages in more detail, but the main thing I was watching is the temps. Good to have a 2nd opinion so I'm not cooking it thinking all is well.

I use HWmonitor myself but I dont need graphs. And i mostly use it cause it has the old Logitech G15 LCD support. Theres also CPU-z to see stuff but Im not sure what all it can do. Then i know MSI Afterburner can show CPU temp as a graph but im not sure at what interval (ie like only last 5 minutes).

But looks like you got it sorted anyways. Thats more where I would expect the fan and under idle it should drop to around 500rpm if its the Noctua fan.

Your WD Black (and ssd) drive is a bit higher temp than I prefer but otherwise everything looks good for being in a closet!

The hdd/SSD are a bit cramped in a 5.25" hot swap mobile rack. Certainly not ideal but neither is this whole 2u rack case I'm using.

O so the drives arent in the 2u case? Theres nothing wrong with 2u cases...built in plenty of them. Just dont try stuffing high temp stuff (2080ti, 3900, ect) in there without expecting some loud fans

I know 1.5v for my 965BE was supposed to be the max. I think my 3.9Ghz OC was under 1.45v (maybe I have screenshots somewhere to verify) 1.28v for a stock clocked 945 is probably a bit high. One day I accidently put 1.6v to the CPU and crippled the Mainboard.

Edit: I found an old post on another forum where I mention my 965BE was running at 3.9Ghz @ 1.5v.
