Hi there. I have an issue with my 2007 tacoma 4 doors.
So before all of this, the 4x4 was working fine.
One day, I let my friend use it and he didn’t know how the 4x4 works and he somehow engaged the H4 and the L4 while the truck was on D ( moving )
After that, the truck got stuck. It wouldn’t move at all. Not on R not on D or any other gear. All you could hear was horrible noise coming from most likely the T-case. Anyways had it towed to the closest shop. They told me they had to replace the T-case so I told them to do it. By the way I payed total of $600 for parts and labor.
So, I assumed that the truck was going to be good after they change the T- case and everything. And, when I went to pick it up the truck now would drive like a regular truck however the 4x4 wouldn’t engage. I put it in N and turn the bottom to H4 and the light starts flashing.
I asked the mechanic why it didn’t engage and he told me it had some other electric issue and he said to take it to an electrician to test it.
I don’t know what to do next. The truck drives fine but I now have a rwd truck bc 4x4 won’t engage.

any ideas of what it could be?
Do I have to reset the 4x4 computer?
Or maybe t case that the mechanic installed was bad and it doesn’t work?

There’s a thread here on how to test the actuators. I quickly looked but didn’t come across it. I’m sure someone will chime in with the link.

Usually it is the one that gives you issues. But everytime I tried putting it on H4 I can hear the front diff actuator work. I’m thinking maybe it’s the other one in the T-case. Remember! That was the part that was replaced. And before all this happened it was working fine. Either way I’m going to test both of them later on today to make sure they are working correctly. I’ll keep you updated.

Hello guys. After all day testing and cleaning both of my actuators. My truck is now working how it should work.
All I did was run some tests to see if they were working but none of them responded. So I pulled both of them out. I cleaned them internally really good and tested them again. Now this time they started working. I did a few tests after. I didn’t put them back where they have to be but I left them out and plugged. I had someone else control the 4x4 switch so I was able to see if they were doing something or not. I saw that they started to function so I put everything back how it was
after I was done, I gave it a last test to see if it would engage and I finally had a solid light on dashboard. I let the wheels spin and front and rear were spinning. I went around the block and now it engages and disengages without problems.

thanks a lot for the information guys. It really helped. Im a happy man again

I'd never use that mechanic again. Plus I'd have a lifetime supply of beer from my friend after he paid me back 600 bucks. And I would ask the mechanic for the old transfer case. Transfer cases are pretty easy work on. They are simple once you get them taken apart.
