Whining rear diff

Hey guys, has anybody had any luck getting there diff fixed by Toyota? I’ve seen some other posts of people with whining rear diffs and wondering if they had any luck getting it fixed? Everything I go to the dealership about they always say “it’s normal!!!” It’s a 2019 Tacoma with 13k miles on it, the front end popping noise is brake pads they claim, the dam hunting trans is “normal “ and I’m sure when I take it in for this it’s gonna be “normal” too!!! I’m sorry but this is only new vehicle I’ve ever owned to have this much crap going on and they seem to wanna just “sweep it under the rug” so to speak. And btw, this motor is loud as hell too!!! I’m very disappointed in this truck, I wanna like it so bad but the quality compared to the older trucks is just not there I don’t think

Not sure about the whining diff (I don't notice it on mine) but some people here have said they hear on their truck, but hunting gears for this truck is normal. There's a lot thread that talks about it here. The way to fix it is a tune and a regear (which most do anyway when they start modding).
Not sure what you mean when the front end pops.

When I go to back up and turn the wheel there’s a popping noise they claim is the brake pads making the noise, it started at about 3k miles!! Sounds just like ball joint noise

 

Brake pads slap. It is actually quite normal.

 

That is exactly when mine makes the noise, light throttle and highway speeds!! New vehicles just ain’t supposed to do that!!! My old 99 Mazda/ranger with 2.5 4cyl and 240k was way quieter than this truck has ever been and it’s new!!!!

 

My slap noise started around 7k miles. Dealer claimed normal. Will work on it whenever I go to replace pads. I’ve gotten use to it

 

Just as an FYI, there is no definitive fix at the moment. I can save you a lot of time and tell you there are two groups of people with the whine - those that are bothered by it and those that are not. If you are really bothered by it yet otherwise want to keep your truck, invest in some aggressive AT tires, or, even better, MTs. Best of luck to you.

 

I’m gonna try take it in this week and see what they say, I got a feeling I already know what they gonna say.....”normal!!!” Sux, I may have to just trade it if they won’t fix it, im just not gonna have it like it is!!!

What you mean? Is there a TSB out for the rear diff on these trucks? If so what’s the TSB number I can refer too?

Had an older Silverado previously that was quieter and comfier than my new taco (stock vs stock).
But it’s not as fun... lol

Honestly if I cared about the noise, I would have bought a Range Rover Velar or Evoque with the amount of money I put into the truck already. I or my local off-roading shop have Already taken everything apart on this truck except the engine and transmission and everything was solid including the diff (I am actually regearing it this week) minus some small cheap parts that a lot of vehicles had which I replaced (ie. Needle bearing, leaf hanger and shackle).
Those parts wouldn’t really matter much if you plan to stay stock, but first I like to modify my vehicles so as long as nothing is wearing prematurely or failing, noise doesn’t matter to me as long as it doesn’t annoy me besides; I have AT tires and play loud music so can’t tell. Second, I like comfy rides, so hangers, suspensions, stiffeners bumpstops and adjusters were all added/upgraded. If you are off-roading, you are going to replace most of those anyway but I went a bit overboard for my type of off-roading to make sure I am comfortable.

So IMO, you either mod the shit out of it until you are satisfied/stop caring about the noise or you trade it in and get something other than a Taco cause for some reason, Taco hardly has any sound deafening and don’t give a shit about the diff whines as long as it’s not failing.

 

They’re not gonna fix the diff howl. Best case scenario they give you a new diff and the noise will come back again later. And sometimes even louder than the first time around. If you like the truck, and you don’t want to risk having a louder noise, stay where you’re at.

 

There’s a TSB for i think 16-18s, that began to be implemented at factory sometime in 2019. Most have mixed results.

I fixed my diff last week with an oil change and 10 oz of Archoil 9100. Mine is a 2020 with 10k. Still has whine, but very hard to hear.

 

whining diff on mine. In dealership right now.
Told me it happens on all new tacomas.... I had a 2019 that didn't do it. So then the dealership changed the answer to on all 2020s.

 

If they tell you it's normal, ask for the cheese platter to go with the whine.

Couple other thoughts.

Don't trade it. Sell outright. Regardless of the numbers on the papers in front of you, you aren't getting your best value with a trade.

Take an extended test drive in your daily driving conditions the next purchase. The trans and loud engine gripes you have were there day one.

 

Drop it in sequential 5th. 5 and 6 are both OD gears and if you run in 5th it doesn't hunt as much. Less gear changes and less time in 4th, better MPG anyway.
