You mean so both outlests are on top? Yeah, I would think that would be better than what yo have now.

I just remember the instructions for mine being pretty specific about the orientation.

I’m pretty sure that with a Long (Tru-Cool) LPD cooler it is designed to bypass most of the cooler when the fluid is cold to help it warm up.

    https://www.trucool.com/products

I live in Colorado and going up passes will run the temps up a bit but usually dropping down a gear will keep them under control. I generally see 70° above ambient temperature around town once it’s up to operating temperature (1/2 hour).

My outlets point up. I duplicated the old TRD mounting system with rubber mounts. Gates hoses from O’Reilly’s. Spring clips instead of hose clamps.

What did you make the covers for the hoses out of and what did you use to trim the hole? Looking to do something to add a little protection to the hoses to keep them from rubbing/chaffing.

Here's how I added a big cooler -- I am using it for the power steering

It was stuff I had left over from when I used to work at a shop.

The covers are from a fuel line from a Honda (banjo fuel line from the fuel filter to fuel rail) that serve the same purpose. It's kind of like vacuum hose but large diameter.

The edge trim I also had laying around but I know Mcmaster sells the edge trim. They sell hose protector sleeves too but the braided type.

Thanks! I ended up using some larger diameter heat shrink tubing and slit in down the center to fit over the lines, so hopefully it'll hold up. Also cut a slit in some foam weatherstripping to put around the edge, doesn't look as clean as yours but I think it'll serve its purpose.

The hoses shouldn't move around much if at all so it should be fine.

Yeah, I've been running them without anything for about a year and been fine, but figured it couldn't hurt :notsure:

About to order everything to do this myself and curious to hear any arguments as to why people are still using the stock rad cooler with the aftermarket?

I know its way less common in Tacomas, but the strawberry milkshake can still happen in these trucks right? I just don't see why you'd risk it if you're already putting a cooler on.

I ran mine inline with the factory rad cooler because I live in a cold climate and I wanted to maintain the stock cooler's ability to warm the fluid up when it's cold out.

I have mine routed from trans- aftermarket cooler - stock cooler - back to trans and even in the summer, I don't think I've seen higher than about 190 degrees accorded to my SG 2.

Also, shouldn't have to worry about strawberry milkshake if you maintain your cooling system properly (i.e change your coolant frequently and replace your radiator if it's old or is the original)

Does it get cold and stay cold where you are? Like consistently 40° or lower?

I have never heard of the strawberry milkshake scenario occurring in a 1st gen Tacoma.

Then you might be ok without running the fluid though the radiator.

For those of us in colder clines, the cooler is so efficient that when the ambient temps are low, the fluid temps struggle to get up to a high enough running temp.

Not sure if anyones asked it but how much fluid does the 678 cooler hold? Going to be installing one and want to ballpark how much fluid I'll need to get it to the exact level its at

Not very much. Sertainly less that a quart, even if you drip some swapping around your hoses.

I might have had to add a 1/2 qt and I spilled some.

Thanks for the write-up, @zero4. Just knocked this out this afternoon in anticipation of towing a travel trailer around all winter.

Nice pic. I was wondering how OP cleared that annoying ass hardline but didn’t seem like he had a notch. I’m just about to notch mine to clear.

Well, been trying different methods/locations. For now, that hardline can easily be bent so it’s been seeing some massaging.

    I have a few more constraints , since I have a winch.
I started out with spacer method and wasn’t a huge fan of having to come up with spacers , and I couldn’t lower the cooler since it would hit winch bar.
    DBE777FB-1328-450C-8D7C-DAF912000187.jpg

Tried bunch of different positions and will be going with this here below. I bent the horn tab , so I can use that as a mounting point. It brings in the cooler closer to radiator. Had to massage the hard AC line. This allowed me to lower the cooler and not deal with spacers. I do now have to weld a tab though from the backside. That will be tricky cus I’m not taking out the support to weld a tab. Pictured is how it will be. Weld is the yellow green (on the back of support ) and orange will be nuts on the back of tab. The cooler tab is flush to backside of support.

Although I barely have any tools here , we just got a welder so thought I’d open up the possibilities.
