Just wanted to cast in my vote and say that we definitely need a tune for 3rd Gen 4Runners / 1st Gen Tacomas.

@OVTune As per your last message I'm sure that things have certainly escalated due to the unwritable chips, so I wish you luck as I'm sure many, many people would gladly appreciate a crack for the 5VZ ECU.

As for anyone else who sees this, here's an interesting video I found:

    From their website.

Im not an expert but say if you can flash it and reupload the "improved" software, shouldn't that have a door to some adjusting/tuning? I thought reason behind not being able to change anything was because you couldn't flash the ecu. Again I could be wrong about the whole thing.

Those version ECUs can be flashed over OBDII, provided you have the original binary. I have some for those old tundras

It wouldn’t surprise me if these guys are using a generic description for all their ECUs and selling salvage units.

Hi there. Sorry to jack the thread here, but just curious if I could get your friends info that lives here in Oregon. I'm an Oregonian and would LOVE to flash my 3rd Gen Tacoma, but don't own a PC and don't trust myself to do the tune anyway. I'm awful with that sorta stuff. Thanks!

    5VZ-FE swap
Hi! I've stumbled upon this thread and I'm very curious, I created an account just to post here :D
I'm actually swapping a 5VZ-FE out a 2003 4x4 5 speed tacoma into a Nissan 200SX, and all of the aftermarket ECU options are quite pricy, so I'd love to have the stock ECU be unlocked a tunable. @OVTune how's the progress looking right now and how would I go about getting one of those sweet, sweet tunable ECU's

I really need full standalone for my power levels, but it just tries to shift through the gears as quickly as possible without regard for engine load. Some automatic engine braking on downhill decent with vacuum and light brake pedal activation, for another example. But mostly if I'm at 0 vacuum or boost, hang on to the gear until 3500 or 4k for goodness sake. Actually I just about full time manual shift anyway, it's easy to do with floor shifter, and I feel more in control.

At least an aftermarket ECU is something that you can actually buy and get support for at this point...

@OVTune mentioned a sister board. I’m not sure what’s all involved but maybe if there was a long enough list of committed buyers it might peak their interest.

Considering his current customer base is much larger and buying several thousand dollar turbo kits it wouldn’t surprise me this never goes anywhere. Can’t blame em. It’s a business it’s needs to be profitable.

I'm thinking this could be extremely profitable for those of us and beyond who want to tweak it. I, being a computer repair tech myself would be very interested but I think if he was going to do it, he would have by now. It just doesn't take 3 years. He talked about it earlier in the thread it wasn't all about the money. He could sell updated/tweaked ECU's on Ebay for sure and make good money. But from earlier posts, it looks like he never got back with people when they emailed him. Communication is key, so it would have been better to communicate to people exactly what all is going on, not just leave them hanging.

To whomever is still following the thread, I was able to get in contact with someone from OVTune and the answer I got was that they were using different tuning software prior to April of 2020 and were able to reflash the ECU's, but now they have their own software they're working with and support for all the vehicles they used to be able to modify is being added little by little.
By end of year there should be support for 5VZ-FE, here's hoping!:fingerscrossed:

Maybe if we can show them that there's a lot of interest in this modification they'll add it sooner :D

One caveat: I don't want to be relying on one random shop to be doing my tuning. I want to buy the tools/software, not the service.
