It's fine in the city, just put it in D on the highway so you're not burning extra gas. I don't see how keeping it in 4 helps though?

Leaving it in 4 just means it won't shift above 4th gear, which probably wouldn't really happen during city driving even in D. Once you jump on the highway, however, being in a lower gear makes the engine work harder. Really the only times I've ever purposefully downshifted were to use engine braking. I can't see any reason leaving it on 4 is beneficial in the city but I'm not an expert by any stretch.

I do it because I noticed the truck seems to “short shift” in D and I can’t stand it.

i cant stand hearing the truck going back and forth deciding gears like a woman choosing clothes. i only drive in 4th until constant 50mph and higher. i often manually shift off the line.

ANY type o driving ......urban under 45mph is essentially mandated
    harassed
    patrolled
    enforced by the EPA

the 2.7 is designed /engineered for torque
    NOT HP or performance

the 2020 rav4 engine chunks out 50 more HP................. needing
at least another 500rpm to do so

that could easily be adapted to the tacoma
yet most dont Need to wind up another 500rpm

another 40-50foot pounds o torque would do nicely
