What Aftermarket Radio do you have?

My guy is buying a 2007 Tacoma tomorrow and we're looking to replace the radio system. What's the best aftermarket radios that you guys are using? He was looking at this: https://www.carid.com/kenwood/ddx-3...dx376bt.html?singleid=1762809676&vehicle=2051 but we're open to recommendations

Edit: what other pieces are needed for installation?

 

I have a Kenwood ddx-595. Sound is great, has the features I need. Sometimes it freezes up (rarely, but does happen)
If I were to buy a new one it would have Android Auto/ Carplay.

Buy it from Crutchfield. They have some of the best prices and will hook you up with everything you need. If you need help with anything before or during the install they are very helpful

I do recommend the schosce dask kit it’s much better than the metra kit

 

Get it from Crutchfield with a prewired harness. I have the DD394. They will help you with it.

 

Love my Sony. I got the prewired harness from Crutchfield and it was fairly easy. Would have been a PITA without that harness. Also, I spent the extra $60 or so to keep the steering wheel controls. Well worth it.

I’d also recommend a speaker upgrade. I got this. You’ll need to make or purchase a mounting bracket for the tweeters but the install was pretty easy.

Let me jump in with a "buy it from Crutchfield" recommendation! Best company in the business, and they've been around for a very long time. Outstanding products, great prices, and the best customer service in the industry. Although I'm still running the original head unit in my Tacoma, I've probably bought and installed 8-10 radios in my cars over the years...all from Crutchfield.

 

Pioneer is the only aftermarket audio company that uses MOSFET transistors in their head units instead of a chip for its speaker outputs and their sound quality at high volumes is better than all others because of it. Pioneers also have slightly more output because of it too.

From a reliability standpoint stay with Pioneer, Kenwood, or Alpine.

I can't stand Sony head units, they aren't as reliable as the other major brands, and their ergonomics usually drive me crazy. They also like to skew the tests for their specifications sheets to remain competitive.

For the install kit in a second gen you can't beat Scosche.

I just went to the Scosche website and they don't seem to have a dash kit for double DIN 2014-2015 Tacoma. They cover 2005-2013 the jump to 2016 and up.

 

Thinking back, I did buy one aftermarket (Nakamichi) radio for a BMW from someone other than Crutchfield because the buttons and display looked the closest to OEM. But I did buy the harness adapter from Crutchfield. That was the only head unit I've ever bought from someone other than Crutchfield.

Blaupunkt used to sell head units that matched the OEM look of those 80s BMWs, but had gone "all in" on Fast and the Furious Displays. The only way to get one of those would be to buy second hand from Ebay. I had contacted Blaupunkt to ask if they would ever produce a face display that matched their older radios again, and they told me to not hold my breath...lol

Follow up: Just saw that Porsche has released a couple of "period correct" looking "modern" radios: a single DIN and a double DIN. Unfortunately the single DIN starts at $1,500, so that's an immediate "no go" for me...lol

 

Put a Sony XAV-AX100 in my 2012 Tacoma about a year ago. Love it. Replaced all door speakers with Kenwood. Sound great. Got all from Crutchfield. Great to deal with and their after purchase support is top notch. They only provide the Metra dash kits which others are correct. It's junk. Get the Schosce. It's more money but well worth it. Luckily the Metra kit was free with my purchase.

+1 on Crutchfield. I currently have a Pioneer head unit I bought from them in my '14; it's several years old now and has a few operational quirks that may or may not have been fixed in newer models. I put a Kenwood single DIN in my '89 Corvette and really like it. Should I ever have to replace the Pioneer I'd go with Kenwood.
