Interesting. I hadn’t seen the stacking technique for long exposures before, very cool! My computer already hates me for doing panoramic merges, I’m sure it’ll love stacking 20+ images. :boom::rofl:

Pentax lens hoods generally have a window for adjusting a polarizer or adjustable ND filter, but it’s one less thing to clean and not forget when setting up.

    I disagree with Tony.

First, he's not using the polarizer correctly if he's got gradation across the frame. And giant spots does not show off "shiny"-just demonstrates an unwillingness to try and control the light (in my opinion).

Focus stacking is usually used when you want to maximize the depth of field. So you want everything from the foreground to the background tack sharp. No way to get around that except selecting several focus points and then blending them.

ND filters allow you to control exposure. Sure, you can do that with a raw file and LR or PS. I use split ND filters for sunset or sunrise shots. I use a 10 stop ND filter for nice buttery water shots-I personally cannot see doing that by making a bunch of exposures and blending them or blurring them in LR. Another thing that ND filters and long exposure help you with is getting rid of moving people when you're shooting cars. Also, in some cases, you want to have a slow shutter speed when shooting moving subjects (prop blur in airplanes, blurred background or motorsports). On a bright sunny day, that might not be possible without an ND filter.

The beauty of in camera is you get what you want with some work on the front end without having to spend a bunch of time on the back end and I am getting to the place where I want to maybe make a few key edits and be done with editing. And unless I'm making pano's, I don't want to be burning CPU cycles.

Reasoned, articulate, and perfect example of how I wish people on the internet would disagree. Cheers, Ian.

I happen to agree with tony insofar as I no longer will miss a shot i wanted by having forgotten a piece of gear, etc. I think it's about having as many tools in my toolkit, so to speak.

Thank you you for the compliment.

Don’t forget, you cannot add what wasn’t there-If you missed a frame or two, it’s no better than leaving a filter. Sure, you can process a raw file to give you an HDR image, but if you lack highlights or shadows, you lack them and may not be able to recreate what you are looking for.

No doubt editing has come a long way since photoshop first released. But just like other tools of the trade, they’re not much good if you don’t know how and when to use them.

Righto. I think next time I go out I might try ND filter then try the stacking and show the results.

I took it as just a technique to use for some circumstances, not as photographic gospel. :)

Just like ND filters and polarizers. ;)

@DetroitDarin try it with running water, like rapids in a creek or a waterfall, if you can.

There are other benefits to composition and technique to using a tripod too. Pentax automatically has mirror lock up on the 2s timer, so as long as your tripod is heavy enough to damp the shutter vibration and the wind isn’t bad (which it shouldn’t be for long exposure work) it should be simple.

Three stop ND on a tripod, from last spring.

I practice automotive photography. I've had a dslr for about 10+ years but didn't really start using it until I moved to Utah about 3 years ago. I work for LUXE Automotive and get to shoot a lot of really neat projects. Since I got my Tacoma a couple of months ago and started taking it on trails, a whole new world has opened up that I am so unfamiliar with. I find it challenging editing nature and landscape shots, and trying to show perspective on how steep some of these angles are can be difficult. If someone were to offer a chance to photograph some “rarely” seen wildlife, I guess a safari type deal, do you think there would be any interest? Would you pay?

I meant more in the grand scheme of wildlife photography than locally. Photography workshops, pre-rona, seemed to be booming :notsure:

I have friends who run a workshop business. You would recognize the names of some of the pros they contract with. Trips are 5 figures. All inclusive and I can tell you, it's worth it. If you look on their website, you can find several 45 minute/hour long webinars and a couple of free eBooks as well.

I can barely get people to pay 250$, sounds expensive but if they knew what all went into it I think they’d understand.

I would charge similar to a guided hunt cause that's essentially what you're offering.
