hi all, i hope everyone is staying safe. i'm one of the fortunate to keep their jobs and continue working from home during this crisis.

can anybody recommend an adapter that can allow my laptop to connect to two monitors which have hdmi connectivity.

i have an hp laptop and my two options are vga and usb c - the other port i believe is an HP type of port which looks more like a squared off hdmi port.

    thanks!

my job supplied us with docking stations, we use the Dell D3100 which connects via USB and has two HDMI ports. alternatively you can use a VGA - HDMI adapter and that "squared off" port should be a Mini DVI (i think), which you can also find a HDMI adapter.

however, this happened on my old work laptop, the ports might be too close together so you would have to trim the VGA ears on the laptop end.

unfortunately my docking station does not have hdmi ports but only connects to hp monitors

i've seen vga to hdmi adapters but they only duplicate the screen and not extend it. (i dont need two monitors showing the same thing)

    thanks

Yeah, Dell has it's own stupid HDMI port, you need to buy adapters to make it work with normal HDMI. Straight from the Apple playbook. I believe, but I'm not positive, that Dell can sell you a splitter cable for that port and it will work with dual monitors giving you dual HDMI ports.

give us the model of the HP laptop to do some research on and are you hoping for screen mirroring, each screen showing the same thing or the ability to open a different screen on each monitor. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 10 there is a feature that allows you to run 2 different windows right next to each other.

If you have USB-C, you can use most any USB-C hub with dual video out to achieve what you are looking for.

Here's one on Amazon that should do it.

1080P monitors should be fine with this.

If you are looking to output to external 4K monitors, a cheap one probably won't get you there.

A squared-off looking HDMI port sounds like a Displayport.

    HDMI left, Displayport right.

there should be an option in "display settings" to extend the desktop instead of duplicate. i've never had an issue pulling that off with or without docking stations.

Honestly, forget dual monitors. About 4 years ago I bought a 43” 4K TV as my monitor and i can’t imagine going back. More overall resolution and no breaks from separate monitors. Cheap too.
