I honestly preferred it in the Stan. It’s logical that it’d be better to be in an armored vehicle rather than on your feet when you hit an IED, but there was something in my head that made me feel like I was in control of where my feet went, but in the steel box someone else was ha. Wow, just realized that was a decade ago this Summer. Time flies!

    112,000 / 28 years = 4,000 a year haha. Don’t know what the PO was doing.

OP, I can't believe I just found your thread. I'll be reading up on this for the next week! I've got a 94 with 234k, and yes, I am ENVIOUS of your low odo reaing...

I haven't read the whole thread yet, so forgive me if this has been answered: When you replaced the front main seal, did you just replace that as preventative maintenance, or because it was leaking? Right now, I *think* my my timing is off slightly (based off some feedback I got from yotatech). However, the 22re runs great, and got 19.3 MPG last tank for mostly stop-and-go driving. I was thinking replacing the front main seal would give me an excuse to poke around, and also finally buy a timing light. How long did the job take you? Thanks!

It was so long ago I barely remember ha but when I got it I basically replaced anything and everything even remotely in question so I would know in my own mind for a fact what was good and what wasn’t. I wanted it minty forever ha. Unfortunately a relative borrowed it for a bit and trashed it but other than the rust I’m getting it back to reliable condition again.

If you have any questions let me know. My wife and I love this little Pickup. I’ll be sad the day both of our cars are gone. We genuinely don’t know what we’ll buy next and actually be happy with once all the 1st gen Tacomas and 3rd Gen 4Runners are gone. Will have to compromise and get a 2nd Gen Tacoma and a Subaru we think... kinda lame ha.

That said, we no longer use this guy for highway trips anymore (except when we move). It’s nice to be able to hold the speed limit in the 4Runner haha.

My wife had taken over the Pickup as her daily to get to work and run errands. Makes her happier to drive the real transmission and she likes how it’s kind of a fun go-kart more than a heavy car ha. We were just parked next to a kid in a diesel F-250 at a light and the wife laughed at him haha. I love this woman :D

Anyway, other than maybe downsizing tires and wheels (I’m at 12% over stock) we plan to keep her for as long as humanly possible! Good luck with yours!

I've been thinking the same about the day all the 1st gens are gone/rusted to crap :(

Yeah I do have a question actually about the speaker install. Did you just drill through the door? I've been having trouble mounting some new speakers. Cant seem to get a screw to stick. Only 2/4 screw points are into the actual metal, the others are into soft door panel only. Maybe try machine screws with washers on the end?

The plastic speaker vents by the driver and passenger foot well pop out and I just replaced those speakers. Nothing custom extra in mine. Just upgraded a little bit.

The oldies finally got some bigger updates this month:

    Matching 2006 V8 SR5 Tundra/4Runner.

Got family visiting from the islands soon, a baby nephew, growing family, etc.

We said we’d wait until the old ones finally die to update, but at 22 and 28 years old, and 305,000 and 113,000 miles old, they just wouldn’t show any sign of stopping, so...

We found the Tundra from a one owner retired gentleman and got it for 5 grand with 284,000 miles on the clock and then sort of accidentally happened onto the Runner for about the same price. All in all a good month! Time for some road trips! Just did 3 states and back today in the 4Runner to break it in! 9 hours of driving and honestly the most comfortable vehicle we’ve ever adventured in. Will maybe start new build thread for the pair after it warms up. ✌

We almost bought a Tacoma last month for 18k. Super glad we found these instead with plenty of cash to spare. I like my Tacomas. But I can have 3-5 other Toyota 4x4s for the same price!
