I bought a 2020 TRD Sport Premium this January and want to put the OEM roof rack on. I messaged the salesman I purchased my truck from, and after a week or so, he got back to me with an email from the parts manager saying that "Toyota doesn't recommend any kind of roof rack on a Tacoma with a sunroof because it can't support as much weight". WTF? The stock images for the roof rack on both the Canadian and US Toyota websites show the roof rack on a Tacoma with a sunroof, and a little bit of research shows plenty of examples (including 2020's) with that rack. Again, WTF? Has anyone heard this before? I'm contemplating justsjust screw it, and ordering it online.

I'm currently waiting for my salesman to dig deeper into it.

Haven’t heard of that. But I would highly suggest you dig into the threads here regarding the 2020 OEM roof rack. Pre 2/2020 build date, the crossbars will not clear the shark fin antenna. After 2/2020 build date, they moved the antenna back to the 2016-2019 location to fix this issue. Plenty of threads about it.

So I’ll say 2 things here that seem like logical reasoning for roof rack not recommended on a sunroof equipped truck for liability purposes.

Weakened structural support because roof is partially removed.

Reasonable plausibility that your load may contact the pane inadvertently and shatter the sunroof.

For me, I’d just order one and install. They’re easy to do. You’ll find cheaper prices online than what a local dealer sells them for. Then, load with care. Your truck, in the end, so if you want a roof rack then get one. Dealer isn’t going to care either way.

Thank you for the replies, just went down the rabbit hole regarding the antenna placement and looks like my truck may never be compatible with the OEM rack as a result. At least I didn't find out the hard way.

There are several companies making aftermarket racks. When I realized mine wasn't compatible I sold it and purchased the Bravo from @upTOPoverland. Solid product and will be purchasing the softopper truss rack soon. Good luck!

Any rack will hit your MPG's. Get a Thule or Yakima and leave it off when you're not using it.
Had the Yakima on my 2nd gen, and it installs and removes in about 3 minutes.
