Missing Transmission cooler.

Im fairly positive that my 16OR had it on the window sticker but I dont have my truck with me. I'll look when I get home tonight.

 

I'm pretty sure it did, I recall reading it as well under the tow package specs.

 

Switching you mean? Or putting a even larger cooler back in that unused space?

I found this on the interwebs, for what that's worth.........

Type WS is Toyota's full synthetic blend of ATF for their 2008 and newer cars, which they say does not need to be changed and is good for the entire life of the vehicle. Type-IV is not synthetic so it needs to be replaced every 60k miles.

So just for shits and giggles I called a place up here near me called Joppa Automatic Transmission. I spoke to the owner. I had them replace a tranny for me on a 83k mile 2006 Diesel Ram that I bought new and only used once to tow any weight back in the day. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on the statement above in blue and what I am saying now.

So the owner of the shop said that the WS is what he would leave in there. It's far superior to anything I ran back in the day and is a synthetic blend anyway. If I wanted a flush and fill of that with a filter replacement it would be $220 and to determine how full it was they would fill it to spec, then drive it and come back and open the overflow bolt and if anything came out they were done, if not they would add a little more and drive it around the block again. He definitely recommended against a full switch to synthetic.

The problem is, for me, since I have no experience (no wait, I have my experience with the new to me Ram, and I have experience with a new to me 2002 Nissan Altima needing a new tranny and entire cat. system at 104k too, neither of which were ever abused and which were maintenance per each manuf. by the dealers) I can't really dispute any claims. I can only go by experience. I am older and was raised to take care of our vehicles to be sure they last. Now with modern features and supplies a lot of that responsibility is passed off to people that either don't know what their doing or just don't care. So after two new vehicles that were suppose to "last forever as long as I took care of them" I am just a little hesitant to just say "ok" to anything anymore.

 

Unfortunately there is nothing empirical. My Wife's subaru had the transmission replaced at 60k miles before fluids are even replaced. I stopped replacing transmission fluid in my old Ford which hadn't had a change in over 150k miles and no issues. Just because a tranny goes doesnt directly mean it wasn't maintenance properly or didnt have the right fluid etc.

 

I was referring to this part - that just upgrading to a better synthetic and keeping the OEM cooler wouldn't be enough in my case with the amount that I tow in the mountains.

I certainly defer to gearcruncher, the resident transmission expert.

Re: the cooler in that unused space - would only work well with a fan on it to 'push' the heat out of it. Might be a good call for crawling, just don't want to smack it on a rock or something. I prefer the cooler in the front for the 'ram air' to push through it when driving. I may add an electric fan at some point for crawling, but I don't do that much.

 

strange, i guess the older ones did. my neighbors 20 doesn't say trans cooler but still has it.

 

They obviously thought the ink savings would come first followed by the actual hardware.

 

The 2020 brochures state that they come with them. I do not care if they made a change, no one told us. Had I known this I am pretty sure it would’ve been a deal breaker. I would’ve bought a Jeep Gladiator sport with a max tow package. I am at a dealer right now waiting to speak to the G.M. It’s probably a losing battle I know but I have to try.

 

That seems a bit rash? You have to add other, more costly parts to tow anyway. Rear leafs or helpers, brake controller and harness, and maybe gears when you see what the 3.909s are like.

I get being upset and it sucks, but dang.

I was just on the Toyota web site. The following was listed under specs for the Tacoma OR

Class-IV towing hitch receiver,71 ATF cooler (not available on manual transmission), engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, 130-amp alternator, 4- and 7-pin connector with converter, and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC)110 (V6 only)

Seems you should have a ATF cooler. If you have the factory hitch

You guys are funny thinking that anything in the auto industry is set in stone.

 

Even if my Tacoma didn’t come with the actual transmission it’d still be more reliable than a Fiat-Chrysler product.

 

All the peeps who are missing transmission coolers need to check their Monroney (window) stickers. If it says tow package with HD alternator and transmission cooler then it should be equipped. If Stated on the sticker I believe by law the truck must have that equipment. If you don’t have the sticker you should be able to pull it up online using the VIN. If you bought the truck used then I’m not sure you have any recourse as many of our trucks have been modified and dealers are not required to return the truck to stock unless it’s a safety issue (seat belts, airbags etc).

 

From earlier in the thread. The window sticker has never listed the AT Cooler, only the Engine Oil and PS Coolers for the tow package:

On a side note , what size line runs to the radiator/cooler

 

I’d keep the stock fluid. Also, the fill procedure is much more nuanced than that.
