Hey all, My 2012 has the stock am/fm / CD player ( not the jbl ) Which works perfectly.
However I do have an under seat powered sub woofer I took out of my last car before I
    sold it.

Question is : Can the stock radio connect to the powered subwoofer through the back of the head unit?

I see that some models had a subwoofer option that mounted it behind the back seat on the
    double cab models.

Any help here would be a big thank you.... jake

The simple answer is yes... It can be done. There are a few ways to do it. The easiest being with a t harness if you don't want to hack the stock harness. Honestly though, if your going that far you may as well add an amplifier and swap out the door speakers while your at it.

where would this T harness come from ? I have been looking at after market stereo's and with navigation are
more than $500. Not sure I want to go there while the stock system is working fine. Maybe it would be
better to just sell off this under seat powered sub woofer.

I also kept the stock head unit in both my 2015 access cab.. I will also keep the head unit on the 2020 double cab but add 2 amps, swap out the door speakers / tweeters and add 2 10" subs.

I see, I have to say the stock unit is not bad at all. it sounds great and the bass from the speakers is real good
for a stock system. I was really looking for a simple way to use this powered sub. Your idea is great and I have
installed multiple stereos and amps in the past. I will look into what you have brought to the table here. Thanks

Which factory system had the rear mounted sub woofer ? The JBL ?

The premium system (JBL) does have a sub but the system is completely proprietary. They the have an "amp" they pass through for all the sounds / phone etc. Its a much more complicated system to migrate away from.. Honestly if you don't want to go all out.. Change all the speakers and just add a sub if need be.. It really does not matter if the sub is powered or not.. The amount of work will be the same.

In my last truck I used the following:

Focal 6x9 ISS 690 with tweeters (inline crossovers) The tweeters were mounted in the mirror sail panels not the dash.
Rockford Punch P3D4 10 in sub with box
I still have the sub that I am looking to sell. It is designed for an access cab version though.

I just was on the crutchfield site as I have shopped with them on many upgrades.
They sell good stuff. I have been a Kenwood fan for years, And purchase from them.
The Kenwood in my old 2003 Frontier lasted over 13 years then I sold the truck still working then.
I bet over 5000 cd's got played in that stereo over those years. And never a single issue.

They have a 4 component JL Audio for the front of my tacoma for $169 I may run this upgrade
first and see how things play out later. Maybe I can swing some rear speakers for my birthday
or Xmas. Then worry about a sub or upgrade the stereo all together. At least the speakers will be done.

Certainly a good start. The real work comes when you add an amp.. but if you go full system they usually come out pretty well.

Yup purchased the JL audio 4 component system for the front doors. Comes with 6x9 Woofers
and new tweeters, and all the installation hardware for $159 free shipping. It would be great to get
a new stereo. But really I want the stereo with the nav screen. Expensive so I will have to save up or
wait until a sale pops up on a double din ---the one I want. Probably a Kenwood. They are golden to me.
I installed a JVC headunit ,speakers, amplifier, 10" sub in the trunk of my 91 Miata. I even cut a bass reflex port
into the back of the package shelf that allowed the bass notes into the small cabin. Worked perfect.
The joy of that job was the fact the battery was in the trunk.....

Jim, I'm good for the time being. Thanks, I'm going to install the upgraded speakers I ordered.
Then work on the rears. Before tackling anything on the head unit.

I really was concerned more about if I could use this powered sub I have. And it might not be
worth the hassle with the possibility of a nav screen unit in my future., So whats the deal with some of
the head units saying you have to tie into the parking brake pedal and must be set to adjust the system.
Is this some sort of don't play with it while your driving safe guard ????

For me the Nav isn't worth the like 4 grand option the dealers sell it with here. I have apple car play / android so the map is pretty much a moot point for me. The 2020 does have a "maps" app but it also requires an upgrade package and the GPS antenna as well which i was not going to pay extra on top of a vehicle that already ran about 40K.

Nah, I'm with you on that. Too much money already and then they want you to add more.

I got real lucky on mine, Spruce Mica green, v6 only 80K miles 8 years old, looks garage kept.
somebody spent a lot of coin on this truck at some point. 20" rims, Michelin tires ($260 each)
Chrome bull bar, LED running lights and in the bed lighting, Color matched fiberglass lid, After market
head lights, tail lights , Side rail steps, tinted windows, Chrome grill - All toll about $4k or more.
Got the truck literally 1/2 mile from my house for $18K.

Very nice Almost the same color as my old Frontier was. I see yours is a 4x4.
And yes that drives the price up but if you live where snow and hilly terrain are paramount
then it is the best option. Family safety comes first. Nice truck. you will love it .
My work purchased a 2017 access cab 4 cyl. about 3 months ago and I drive it making company
deliveries. The old truck was a clapped out 240k mile 94 Chevy silverado that had about 2 inches
of side to side play in the steering box. So glad to see that wreck gone. The toyota has 60K miles
on it and runs good. But I just liked how quite it was inside, and the seats are very comfortable.
I was sold, So I started my search and ended up with the green truck, So far it's been great, couple of
    little niggles but nothing terrible.
