You can do anything with enough time and a welder... but why?

The 22RE outputs 105 HP and 136 lb⋅ft of torque at 2,800 rpm.
The 2RZ-FE outputs 142 HP and 160 lb⋅ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Not only is it a MASSIVE downgrade, you'd need to swap the computer, engines harness, dash harness, amongst other thing. If you're swapping engines because your stock one is blown, put in a 3RZ-FE. It's a bored out version of the 2RZ-FE. They're basically identical, you might be able to get away with a new computer and re-pinning some connectors.

I get it.... the 22re has cheaper replacement parts and have a fantastic track record of being abused in those older trucks

But I know from helping a buddy swap a 3rz to replace his 22re in an older pickup that you have to completely redo your exhaust system, the 22re comes out driver side and the 3rz/2rz come out the passenger

Why not just buy the 89 and drive it...then just rebuild yours as you can?

You'll spend more time and money making it fit than you would to grab another 2rz or 3rz and put that in.

I agree. Putting in that older motor is not worth it at all. Save up to rebuild the existing motor, or buy a good used one.

Even if you were given the 22RE

The interesting thing the Tacoma fuel tank is on the left so your exhaust most likely will drop down make a 90 degree turn go to the right side make another 90 degree turn and go out the right side

Trouble shooting your wiring issues with the OBI system would drive me crazy .

Not only that the merging of the Engine Harness to the cab harness will be interesting .

Do the engine mounts need moved ?? Is the block the same length from the engine mounts to the bell housing ??

Now where in to driveshafts to long to short

Really get the same engine save lots of frustration .

If you were not broke and this was one of those because I can projects completely different story
