Sailing

I know two guys who did the race in a Moore 24 back in the 1980's. Young kids. Early 20's. They were/are shit hot sailors.

 

pre supplies/water and life raft we were 2087 pounds. Life raft was 53 pounds and 219 pounds of water. We had 14 days of food so that’s like 56 pounds. We drank a lot of water to start in a effort to get weight off the boat. At the halfway mark we dumped some food as we had too much.

We started at around 2400 pounds less Mark and myself.

I don't own a boat myself but have done a few miles on a bunch of cool boats over the years. What kind of sailing do y'all like to do? Racing, blue water, day cruise?

I’m also new here. I’m mostly into inland lakes racing, Iceboats, Cats, keelboats, C scows and A scows. I’m also the race officer for one of the local clubs.

 

I have always wanted to ice boat. I thought about flying out to Wisconsin in February but covid was on the horizon os I stayed home. I done some dry lake sailing in Nevada and that was amazing.

 

It's not something you can plan around though, we get ice reports weekly and drive to wherever we can find clear ice. Fun times when we find it though!

 

I've always wanted to ice sail. Not much of that in California. Do have desert sailing but I hate the sand.

 

Not sure what the Pink Panther has to do with ice sailing, but that was pretty cool. Holy crap, a dude was para skating? Skiiing? ???

We have people doing all kinds of crazy things on our lakes. Para Skiing, Paraskating, sailboarding on ice, and of course the best of all, iceboating. up to 100 mph on frozen lakes without a motor (or brakes).

 

I've always wanted to try iceboating. Looks fun.

I bet capsizes hurt!

 

I've never experienced that, they give ample warning and time to respond. I did sail into open water once. That was... interesting.

 

I assume iceboats float. But I'm sure the skates don't have enough surface area to act as a rudder.

 

They don't float like a regular boat, they are made of Sitka Spruce, so they have natural buoyancy, but they are not watertight by any stretch. I was lucky and only got my feet wet, but when you go in, most people end up swimming. Not fun when the water is just over freezing.

 

What do you wear? I've everything from foul weather gear to a wet suit, but I was always on liquid water.

I assume you have several layers on. Do you wear a waterproof outer layer?

 

Long underwear, Jeans wool socks and a snowmobile suit and a full face motorcycle helmet

 

I always preferred sailing in shorts.

 

Me too, but in Wisconsin winters, we do what we can!

 

I get that. Given the opportunity, I would too!

I assume your summers are warm. But, does the water get very warm?
