2020 Tacoma with less than 2,000 miles in the shop twice for stalling problems. Has stalled out at least a dozen times and dealer says this is normal for Tacomas? Have to pull over and wait. Sometimes it restarts (rough) and sometimes have to wait like 30 minutes to restart. Truck hesitates, shakes, and then totally stops and will not restart. Runs very rough. Throwing 8700 and 17100 codes which dealer tells me is low fuel pressure. Any help? Toyota says all Tacoma’s do this. Really?

Sounds like you have a bad fuel pump, there is an active TSB/Recall for these but supposedly was only pre 2020. And it is far from normal, have had a few 3rd gens, none have done this.

My ‘16 has never stalled. $40K plus for a vehicle that is supposed to stall sounds like a load of malarkey!

Ok - kidding aside, that sucks man, especially for a brand new truck. Of course it’s not normal and sounds like a fuel issue. Hope you get this figured out.

You should call Toyota corp and tell them this is what the dealer says about your brand new truck stalling. You could get seriously hurt one day, what happens when you pull out into traffic and the engine stalls, or if you're merging onto a busy highway?

Go to another dealer, report the one who told you it's normal.

I know there was a recall for fuel pumps but idk what years.

They ran the codes, told you it had to do with low fuel pressure and still gave it back as "advised to bring back if error returns"??? Hellz no. Get it back in there and get it looked at, especially if it's had consistent issues with you. According to that service report, they only mentioned one instance. Should be under warranty regardless, so have them test it and run it to see if they can replicate it. Who just clears the errors and returns?!

There is no fix for this currently. Toyota is waiting on parts from supplier. They have confiscated many trucks and put people in loaners for the duration. Much like the diff recall. If that's any guess, could be up to 120 days with them having the truck.

    Maybe bad gas?

But a brand new truck shouldn't be doing that. I have a 16 with 44K on her (bought used), but not once has she EVER hesitated. Sounds like horse hockey from the dealer.

Next time it acts up, and if possible, take it to another nearby dealer. See if you get different results (or same--whatever the case may be).

Appreciate the help. I’m heading back to the dealer (again) and am hoping to give them some help since they can’t seem to find the problem? Today I broke down and waited for almost 2 hours for a tow. Same check engine light and dashboard full of warning lights. I tried it and it magically started before tow truck arrived. Had two more episodes on the way home. I’m out of hope with this truck.

Just don't let them reset the codes and be done with it.
If this is it, just see what they can do for you.

They technically should have already created a TAS case the 2nd time you brought it in bare minimum.. sounds like the shop foreman or team leader at this dealer should step in and help with diag. if they’re just clearing codes and shipping it..

Sucks man this is your introduction to the truck, 12 in all have been outstanding along with Toyota customer care. Sounds like bad luck with the fuel pump and a sh*ty service dept. They are great trucks.

    Holy shit

Yeah whoever said that is normal should get punched in the throat

Talk to literally anyone else other than whoever you talked to. That person can go to hell.

I'd also bring it to the first person above him when you hit the dealer a second time.

Take it to a different dealer
    Fuel problem for sure
Not normal / they will fix it under warranty if they are a good dealer.

It is scary when it stalls out, but I’m no spring chicken and am old enough to have driven cars with carbs that stalled out. I can remember driving an old Chevette (google that car) where I had to throttle the gas when hitting the brake to prevent stalls. However, I can’t imagine this truck in the hands of a new driver...outcome might not be the same..I’m headed to the dealer (again) and will keep you all posted.

Yeah I'd reiterate it is a massive safety hazard. That is straight bullshit. Obviously you've been around and seem pretty level headed but no way should you be walking out of that dealership to your current vehicle. That thing needs to be placed in the back and you given a loaner
