What is with everyone in this thread storing their guitars outside? No wonder why everyone is taking their guitars to techs and luthiers so often. #inside #wallhanger

I don’t know what magic lubricants are in that package but if you want a tech kit put the following into a sandwhich baggie:

    1. Capo
    2. Feeler gauges
    3. Screw driver/Phillips
    4. Hex keys
    5. Ruler 64ths scale
    6. Wire cutters
    7. Fret guard
    6. Sandpaper, steel wool, or metal polish - to clean frets
    8. micro fiber towel
    9. Soldering iron and solder
    10. String winder
    11. Nut drivers

    if you’re really into it
    1. Radius gauges
    2. Fret rocker
    3. Crown file
    4. Files lots and various
    5. Guitar neck straight edge
    6. Fret kisser - don’t think there are any knock offs of this yet, stewmacs expensive but this is really the quickest tool and safest for any novice to use to correct that buzz quickly
    7. Fret leveling bar - get a level fill it with rice, double sided tape, various sand papers
    8. Tape
    9. Nut files
    10. Glues
    11. Sharpies
    12. Half a pencil

I’m not one for finger board oils. I just use water. There’s a huge debate about oiling the finger board, what to use, what’s safe, does the wood need it, etc...?

I said no, unless you want your neck to look sexy. Lin seed oil isn’t a conditioner it’s more like a sealer... so stop using it. If you do oil a neck, use a little once a year, maybe twice, anymore and in the long term it will seep down and can loosen frets and cause issues in the future. Also, rosewood is a porous disgusting wood that collects all types of garbage, scrub it with a wet cloth over and over until it’s clean, and then sell the guitar and buy one with a maple neck and you can avoid the oil debate forever.

also guitar polishes are expensive marketing gimmicks, like gun oils. Go to the auto store and get some spray wax (turtle, mothers, meguiars) if you want your guitar to shine. Metal polish is great for frets. A drop of oil in your saddles, or machine tuners isn’t required but Could help if your working on older equipment, or plated screws.

Point is - get a few tools, and work on your own equipment. Or don’t.

    Thanks for the tips!
I have an ibanez truss tool coming.
I'll pick up some of the other tools you listed as/before needed.

1st group, everything but 7 and 10, and never use #10.
I prefer to hand wind, yep strange like that.

    Screenshotted the 2nd group.
    4,8,10 and 11 I have.
I dont even know what most of the rest of that stuff is but I will find out.
    Thanks again.

And only outside for some pics.
Stored and played in air conditioned house and only play in garage and then return to house when done.
I like my toys not fukd up :D
But I do buy things to use them.... so I also like to learn how to keep them tip top and fix when needed.

Gave the old rg a good cleaning and wax job last nite.
    Paint is paint eh?
    It needed it.
It was decently cared for even tho its hammered.
Figured it deserved a good deep cleaning.

    fret guard - https://www.amazon.com/Fingerboard-...&qid=1593871994&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-12

come in handy when cleaning frets, not necessary but will make things quick and give a little protection. I didn’t list fret erasers, these things work well, but you can use steel wool (although there’s a big debate about this.) Remember to cover you pick ups and try to minimize the the steel wool from getting every where, also spray wax your guitar first (if you do want to use a wax on the body) to prevent the the wool from sticking to the body. I use mothers mag polish on nasty frets because I have it laying around, but best is to use tape to protect the finger board because the polish will slide past a fret guard. I use blue painters tape as I have it laying around and just reuse the two pieces as I work my mwah up the neck.

when it comes to dressing frets, crowing, whatever... after the filing I go over them with 400 and 600 sand paper, then pull out the Dremel and polish them up. It works and it much quicker then working your way up to 2000 grit.

Yeah man I have all that laying around in the garage except the fret guard.
That freakin steel wool got EVERYWHERE when I was fixing my acoustic a while back.
Total pita, had to retire one of my microfibers after.

Could see where those fretguards would come in handy.
Dont really have any issues with any of my guitars atm except the rg adjustment and thats just because it was setup for C tuning and I just couldnt find enough to keep me busy so I tuned it up to drop d.

Haha yeah matic already turned me on to the pencil trick....
I mentioned the Baretta seemed to tune easier (I keep dropping d on the 6th then back up to E) and he told me what he did.

Theres a wood stove outside Im gonna install some winter but I always never think about it until its freakin cold.

    Guess I'll get on that....

Do I detect a major disdain for rosewood? LOL

Player series? Just because I like Ibanez doesn't mean I'm adverse to owning a strat at some point.

Yeah, they are both Player Series. I recently dropped a pickguard loaded with Fender fat 50s in the Strat. It made a $650 guitar sound like a $1500 guitar!
I just keep the HH Tele In open G for Stones, and Black Crowes songs.
The new PG is tort, changes the look a bit...
