Found metal pieces in the holes of my oil filter

Hello every I did my oil change today and found long metal strings stuck in the holes of the oil filter it looks like its from the metal mesh the oil filter has. Its a fram filter yes I know they are trash never going to buy one again but anyway should I be worried about what I found

 

Metal in the oil filter is always a cause for concern; can you post a picture or two of exactly what you found?

 

I'll post pictures tomorrow have to go back to my dad house and get the oil filter to take pictures

 

By the way, you can buy Toyota filters at Walmart even for under $5

I've got a handful of them, the longer ones even.

 

they were out that day they only had fram filter available for my truck so I got the best one they had which has a metal mesh in it .the gold one for synthetic oil

 

I think some of the wires in the metal mesh came lose went around my engine and came back then got caught in the large holes on top of the filter

 

I'm interested to that picture as well.

 

Where are all the hillbillies that swear Fram is just fine and that it's just a myth that Fram is worse build quality than the other filters?
(if it is indeed the oil filter that failedwe better make sure of that before smack talking I guess)

I grew up in the hills, but I'm more of a flatlander now...

I've ran Fram for decades, and never had a problem with them. I recently got a 5 pack of toyota filters for cheaper, but I'm far from anti-Fram.

My 1st gen 4Runner made it over 300k miles on fram filters.

 

You did? Well that settles it, that means they're as good as OEM quality then

 

Honestly the Toyota ones I have "feel" cheaper than the Fram ones, but that's just because of the weight.

Look, as I said in various other threads, I've made no claim they were just as good as, or better than OEM. Just that fram isn't a pile of shit like so many OEM nazis like to pretend they are.

They're "good enough".

It's an oil filter, it's not rocket science.

 

Yep, it's quite simple, not all oil filters are made to the same quality. Most all of these filters have been cut open and analyzed and data points measured. In almost every measurable, Fram traditional oil filter was at or towards the bottom of the pack. Toyota would obviously encourage any owner to use a high quality oil filter, at least as good as their OEM one or if available, an even better quality filter.
Does that mean running a Fram oil filter will blow your engine up? No, not necessarily.
Does that mean you'll get less longevity out of your engine ? No, not necessarily.
Does that mean an oil filter that doesn't filter to the same level of micron spec filtering will kill your engine? No, not necessarily.

It simply means the Fram(as tested, their synthetic filters are apparently high quality) is a lesser quality oil filter than the others based on those specs.
I'm not sure most people are even aware the Fram filter is even a lower quality filter, I've known it and I've still run it when in a bind.

Even with all of this, besides user error installing it or whatever, an oil filter failure is definitely an anomoly. They aren't common regardless of manufacturer.

I know you know this stuff, I say it more for those that aren't aware and/or are learning as they read along.

I'm curious what these stringy mesh things are that the OP found in his filter

 

Oh yes, seen all those tests, but again, I don't think that makes much of a practical difference, and are more selling points. Like that expensive purple oil and all those "lab tests" that prove it is "superior". If it was really superior, it wouldn't need gimmicky purple dies to make it stand out. And yes, I realize we're talking about the bright orange filters that you can see from a mile away, lol... If toyota filters had that rubberized grippy stuff on their filters, I probably would have been buying them decades ago, lol

My bet is it's junk from manufacturing that wasn't noticed during install. "Long stings" of metal sound like drill chips, and it's basically impossible for something that large to work it's way thru the engine intact. It's going to get pulverized as it makes it's way thru the engine.

If you have fine chips and "dust" in your filter, then I'd definitely worry.

@Tacomaislife I would drain the oil, look for metal shavings in there (use a coffee filter to drain thru). Then replace the filter (being careful to look inside it this time). Then run the engine again, maybe even drive it around for 10 or so miles. If there is internal damage, you're not going to cause any more than what's already occurred. Then drain the oil again looking for chips or fine metal power.

 

I'm inclined to agree; just because you're on the low end of the scale, doesn't necessarily mean it's crap. That's like saying the fellow with only $999,999.99 is the poorest man in the room because all the others are millionaires. I've probably got the better part of a million total miles on the various vehicles I've owned over the course of my life, and I tend to grab whichever oil-filter is on sale for the lowest price when I'm getting my oil. Never had an oil-related issue in any of them.

 

I heard the motorcraft fl400 oil filter at Walmart is a good choice if you cant get an OEM

You might of just got a bad filter (if it was the filter). I've always ran NGK plugs. Had an electrode break off on me. I just installed them and didn't gap them so ruled out me doing it. Sometimes you get crap. Quality and supposed quality parts seems to be going down as price goes up it seems.
