Paging @ahspurlock and/or anyone else running 35s with factory 3:73 gears.
So do you monitor trans temps? I recently got a scan gauge and my temps on highway are around 180 Degrees which is fine. On a hilly back road or sometimes in stop and go traffic or on a trail it will reach 200 and I’ve seen it go up to 220.
I’ve seen the trans temp spread sheets and don’t really know if I fully understand That if your trans temp gets to 200 degrees your fluid life is only 20k miles or whatever the number was I can’t remember.
With all that BS being said, i can’t imagine all the Tacoma’s running around with a 6” lifts and stock gears are burning up their transmissions regularly.
Just wondering what the TW braintrust thinks about this subject.
I eventually want to get gears but to me the “power loss” is not an issue. I jumped from 285/70/17 on steel wheels so they were pretty heavy. The 315/75/16 km3s with the trd beadlock wheels didn’t really kill my power any more than the 285s did. Plus My truck weighs close to 5k lbs.

Tru Cool is what I bought. Haven’t installed it yet (story of my life) but it’s 1.5” thick and should provide some serious cooling. I also bought an in-line temp switch for the fan, so I don’t need to manually turn it on/off. It will turn on when temps hit 185 and off when below 165.

That sounds like a good setup. Any concern about the cold months and it not getting up to temp? And when you do install, do you add ATF?

you probably need to top off the ATF, it would be a good time for a drain and fill while you are at it.

the 3rd gens have a thermostat on the AT trans, but I keep mine pinned open year round. It just takes a few more mins for the temp to get high enough to lock the TC.

I’ve never heard of anyone burning out a transmission due to too cool fluid, just sayin. I don’t care what people say about WS being a “lifetime fluid” it needs to be changed out regularly. A drain/fill every 30k is a good idea.

with that being said I’ve not touched mine since new. I’ve got 96k now, but I have 7qts of WS ready to swap out soon(ish). Then I’ll do drain/fill every other oil change for the next 100k miles. Same with coolant and PS fluid.

I’m in the same boat when I’m towing. On 100 degree days I don’t tow with the Tacoma because it stays HOT. The sequoia has a trans temp gauge and temps never go up past normal. I guess it’s setup for cooling a lot better. I’m buying a Hayden cooler and adding it inline, then I’ll just build a cover for the winter months

@Bandit i looked at the one your talking about too. @HolyHandGrenade did a write up on his cooler/fan install, he tried the plate and he said it didn’t make a difference. I believe he did something else besides the plate I’ll have to post the link to his write up if i can find it. His winters are also worse than ours.

Gonna add it inline. Let the factory cooler do it’s thing. No sense in bypassing it.
