I'm looking at 2 different Tacoma SR trucks. One is the V6 with a trailer receiver and the other is a 4 cyl w/o the trailer receiver.

Does anyone know for sure that a receiver can be added to an SR 4 cyl. Tacoma?

I don't really need a V6 and the vehicles are identical but he 4 cyl is $5k less.

I should add I spoke the the dealers parts manager.....he was very cool and sent me the parts diagram but it's unclear......unclear meaning the entire bumper may need to be replaced to add a receiver at a cost of $2k.

You're gonna need a wiring kit too .... and may have to run a +24v wire to the adapter as well ... (Mine for flat/boat trailer
connector only, Not w/ brake wiring
    ) https://www.etrailer.com/p-C56349.html

The hitch simply bolts on, 150 ish. Nuts already in the frame. The expensive parts is the stupid wiring for the lights. My dad and I build a reley system to transfer it to 4 pin. The reley box for the towing is about 230$ if I remember, then you have to splice it in.

It was a bit stupid but only cost 25$ with diy and 12 hours of my life.

Oof. I hope thats not the only way. Nissan has 2 kits for my frontier - a 6 pin and a 4 pin. Both just plug into pre-existing connectors, one on the back by the hitch and one that adds a couple relays under the kick panel. Super suuuper easy.

Man you guys are great. Many thanks indeed! All I need the receiver for is a bed extender for my 12 ft kayak so sounds straight forward and reasonable $. Looks like l'm about buy my 1st Tacoma.

I put a 2" hitch receiver ( around 30.00 ) on my truck, used 5/8" x3" bolts through the bumper. All i needed the receiver for is a hitch haul, i don't tow.
I will take pictures if you want?

yes you can. I have a 2wd 4cyl dbl cab that I put a hitch and wiring hardness on. Only down fall of doing it on a 4 cyl is you can only pull 3000 lbs. where the v6 is rated for 6500 lbs. so keep that in mind

Sure can. I just got mine. I paid u-haul $398.00 to install the whole setup. I pull a 2200lb boat with my 4 cylinder, no problem so far.20200702_205911.jpg

The harbor freight thing is great just for the bike rack, highly recommend, I had to get a recovery point later so I put the full hitch.

To be honest I also vote to haggle for the v6

    Many thanks again to everyone.

Still negotiating with dealers and I prefer the V6....we'll see where things go. Unfortunately Tacomas are desirable putting me in a weaker negotiating position out of the gate. Also, the virus made them rare at least in central NJ. Dealers are willing to work with a serious buyer, but not much on Tacomas.
