Depends on the type of trip. Whether it’s a day trip out exploring or camping, the essentials I always bring are:

    Roll of TP
    Shovel
    ARB winch recovery kit
    Gloves
    Fire extinguisher
    Bear spray
    First aid kit
    Jumper cables
    Maxtrax
    Extra water
9/10 I’ll bring my Dometic fridge with snacks

To hell with jumper cables. I picked up one of those USB jump packs a couple weeks ago and have already used it twice: once on my jeep and once for a guy at a gas station. That thing is awesome.

    At all times?

    Hitch, tie downs
    Tire inflator and plug kit
    Small flashlight, lighter and multi-tool
    Masks, sanitizer, paper towel
A few protein bars and bottles of water.
FSR map book and OEM first aid kit

I bring what I need on longer trips. Not a fan of clutter and I won't exactly get stranded on my 10km city commute.

Learned long ago not to store anything resembling/smelling like food no matter how well sealed in a vehicle. Its an open invitation to all mice or rodents as such. They will chew your vehicle up.

Tire inflator and plug kit. Quart of oil. Common phone chargers, Shovel recovery strap, and haywire. Not everything I carry, but things that have gotten me out of jams far from home.

Suggestion - keep the bottle of wipes vertical. The damn things leaked all over my truck, thankfully on the floor mat, but it smelled like a lemonade stand for a week.

    A fire extinguisher.

I use to work as a fire lookout and we got a lot of calls about cars on fire from overheating going up the mountains and a lot of fires would start on the side of the road due to people towing and the chains causing a spark on the side of the road.

Plus you never know a $20 fire extinguisher can potentially save someone’s life or prevent a huge fire from growing on the side of a road.
You could really make a difference from a fire spreading by the time the firefighters get there.
I have mine behind the cubby where my backseat where the seats folds down.
