Even if they still allow this (I don't know if they do or not), you would need to keep the shell on. If you don't CHP will see you're driving a pickup with non-commercial plates and you will get pulled over. You may get a warning first time, or maybe a ticket. Ask me how I know.

    Curiosity - how do they know it’s a non-commercial?

ESP with those who have custom plates?

As far as I know it's still there. I have not heard anything to the contrary.

Honestly, with personalized plates, I don't know. Maybe they wouldn't. It could be that if you have personalized plates on a pickup they won't let you register it as a non-commercial passenger vehicle just for that reason. Maybe it truly is a valid (though definitely not legal) loophole, but somehow I doubt it.

I moved from CA to FL and I ended up having to call them several times as they told me 3 different things about my custom plates. They offer a call back option which I highly recommend, you call them and press "1" (or something like that) to have them call you so you aren't on hold for 3-4 hours. There are certain forms you must fill out and send over to them, when you do speak to them just make sure you take notes and reiterate what they say to clarify.

I ended up keeping my CA plates and hung them up

You can check here https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehic...ion-fees/vehicle-registration-fee-calculator/ . When I moved back to CA from AZ I had to pay the diff in AZ to CA tax, registration, smog check and had to get the truck weighed which also cost me some $$. Also I'm not sure how long you have from the time you moved to CA and registering your vehicle. I was told I was late and had to pay a fine:(

no, when you register you’re car in CA you’ll just have to pay the new CA registering fees for your vehicle. I don’t know how long Colorado reg is good for. for ex. some states like NY or AZ pay a reg fee once and it’s good for 2+ years. *edit @xsquid post above* it depends on if you’ve ever had your vehicle reg in ca before. Check link above. I’m not a DMV worker, I just work with them with certain issues. Yes I’m being vague on purpose. ***

In CA we pay registering fees annually....

what does this mean? If you’re CO tags expire in December of 2020, and you try register in CA in July. You’ll most likely lose those 5 months you already paid for in CO. Does that make sense?

Search CA DMV for registering out of state vehicles for more info.

and if you have to ask, what if I get pulled over and haven’t changed to CA plates yet on my CO vehicle? Well, I say be polite and explain to the officer why you still have CO plates (don’t tell him because you’re trying to save on reg fees). With covid19 and CA DMV offices that closed for a few months they are asking law enforcement to be gracious of reg expiration dates between March-July of 2020.

    Good luck

Nope, it's simple. I bought a car in Colorado last October, brought it right in to California. DMW will vin verify it at the office. You will need a smog certificate if it is newer than 1975 (not sure if you need one if it is brand newish?). That is all I had to do.

If it’s within like 4-6 years new I think you’re exempt from smog (but you still pay a smog exemption fee on your reg cause #california :bananadead:)

I had custom plates on my truck and had it classified as a passenger vehicle since i had a camper. Was not hard at all. They just did a quick visual inspection and filled out some paper work.
Not sure just a plain shell would fit the criteria of what’s needed. Don’t know. If I remember correctly it needs to have some kind of toilet and water system to be considered a RV. Not positive.

    Saves about $100 on registration

The easiest way to cancel them is to send them over my way. I'll take them off your hands.

So did the registration state it was a passenger vehicle rather than commercial? It's been about 30 years since I owned a pickup in CA, but I seem to recall that trucks are normally identified as commercial on the reg. Am I recalling that correctly?

You have 10 days from the time you move into CA to get your DL and register your vehicles. I'm sure they'll still fine you even though 'Rona. It's not like they're giving refunds for the lockdown time either...
