That's a nice looking truck! I'm in the same boat ... recently bought an 04 ext. cab 4x4 2.7L 5-spd for my daughter to drive. She's getting the hang of it, but is still a bit nervous in traffic and on hills ;) Have fun with the truck and good luck to your son (and you)!

This all reminds me that if I had a lil mini me running around and when he turned 16 he was gonna get a 4wd 4 banger taco or an early 80 series Cruiser, the dog one that had that 3FE 4.0L engine, the 1991-1992 model. Just like that 4 banger taco it'd be perfect for a 16 year old: engine slow as hell, terrible gas mileage so I know he won't be driving off too far, but reliable as they freaking come:cool::D

I just wanted to thank everyone for the warm welcome and for the tips and suggestions about ABS. Per a couple suggestions it looks like this car never had it. I've owned a few Frankenstein's in may day and it's always a challenge to untangle someone else's ball of yarn.

FWIW we disassembled the interior and gave the carpet a good power wash:

Can anyone recommend a good bluetooth/CarPlay replacement head unit? I'm thinking about incorporating a back-up camera too. I'll do a forum search too ;)

    Thanks again

    Exactly!

Last night he asked me if using the AC impacted gas mileage. Apparently he was with a friend who just got his license who wouldn't let anyone turn on the AC for that reason lol. I'll confess from experience that strategy may save you a few bucks but isn't worth it ;)

    Tasteful modifications :)
Doubt he went through that much trouble just to delete the ABS. Mine doesn’t have ABS, and honestly I don’t see the need for it. You’re son will be fine driving that thing around. Gonna look badass!

I came from a 1999 Ranger with ABS to a 1999 Tacoma with no ABS. I feel safer with no ABS.

Check this thread out....there seems to be a couple options that might fit the bill.

How well did that carpet clean up and how much of a PITA was it to get the carpet out?

@TRD493 thanks fore the link to the head unit thread--much appreciated!

Getting the carpet out was pretty easy and took ~30 mins. Basically you remove seats, door sills, seat belt anchor bolts, center armrest, storage bin rims, and rear jumper seats. There are 6 or 8 clips where the carpet attaches to the body: 2 near each door, then two in each of the storage bin cutouts. Mine had 2 velcro strips in the front footwells...which detaches easily. IIRC, you'll need 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets and a Phillips/cross-point screwdriver.

The carpet has padding in certain places; mine was tacked down to the body in a couple places with some type of glue which is easy to separate.

Once I got the carpet out I hung it on a fence with some clips and went at it with a pressure washer for a half hour or so. The padding on the backside is going to get wet...but it dries pretty quickly. I used some vinegar in the pressure washer to eliminate old carpet stink. I also used a scrub brush for a couple stains and finished it off by pulling a squeegee down to pull all the water out.

Let the carpet drip dry on the fence...or hang it off the back of your truck in the sun as shown below. I had a fan going too since it was an oddly humid day here in CO.

    upload_2020-8-5_8-55-33.jpg

While the carpet was drying I gave the seats a good cleaning too.

Once the carpet is dry--or even before you wash it--wack it from behind with a tennis racket or something. My carpet was full of sand, and flogging it with a racket was very satisfying. The carpet is molded in the shape of the body so it won't lie completely flat...but I also hit it with a vibrating head vacuum which seemed to help.

My wife suggested spraying it with Fabreeze or something before we put it back in.

My only regret while the carpet was out: I wish I had thought ahead and installed some sound deadening mat. Oh well, it was so easy to get the carpet out I wouldn't hesitate to do it all over again when I get some of that stuff.

It was totally worth the effort IMO.

    Hope this helps--

You are dead nuts on with wanting to do the sound deadening while carpet is out. It's one of the very few areas these first gen tacos can use a lil bit of help:cool:

Seems folks here report the most effective places for applying it are the doors and the back panel below the rear window. You'll find good reviews and experiences and input from others that have done it here on the forum.

    Thanks for the tips @cruiserguy!

Your mention of the rear window jiggled a brain cell that would otherwise have remained dormant:
There is a latch on the right sliding glass panel (when looking towards the rear of the truck) that appears to have busted off. Is that a common thing with this gen?

The rear locking latch is a somewhat common part to replace. I like to find the Toyota part number I need through the Toyota diagrams and then shop for best prices and reviews and search through the forum to see if there are better options. I think you're talking parts from this diagram

Sound deadener is expensive. The only place I've really considered putting it is under the bed since that's the largest area with least reinforcement (...that and door panels.) . It carries road noise through the whole frame.
I glued roof underlayment (asphalt/tar based) and open cell foam under the carpet on mine, put bagged fiberglass insulation in the front of the door panels (behind where the factory speakers go/in front of the window sliders), and am still working on sculpting 3/4 inch MDF door panels. I also filled the entire dash with denim-based insulation and covered the plastic dashboard and A-pillars in a thick felt fabric. The back under my window is insulated with 2foot deep (by the entire width and length of the back) subwoofer box and sealed with foam pads. I have acoustic foam lining the ceiling and B-pillars.

All that said, I can say with certainty that the most noise comes from two places: the front foot wells - specifically the passenger side, and the window seals - all of them have their own shortcomings. The window seals on my truck (I assume all 1st gens) have terribly high tolerances and I haven't yet found a good packing medium to improve this.

Sorry about the rant lol. Floor insulation is only a minor improvement.

Wow man, you might be the guy that has gone furthest in the deadening of sound endeavor.
And the results of what you've found to be the most effective at mitigating sound in the cab will be really useful and helpful info.

So are you saying the most noise comes from the footwells and the window trim AFTER the stuff you've already done? Or is this before the work you did?
