I suppose I should clarify. I did take a trip up there with one of the neighbors in their side by side last September, but haven't been all the way over. I spent a lot of time growing up hanging out on the Rollins Pass side though, and I know the Kingston Peak Trail eventually pops out in Tolland. I would like to run the entire trail in my Taco one of these days.

If you can spare about and hour to an hour and half, the hike to James Peak from the Kingston Peak trail is well worth it. It's not a 14er but gorgeous views of the area.

Edit: I went backed and checked my trip report. It's about 5 miles round trip and took me about 2 hours from the trail head on Kingston peak road.

I've been up to the foot of James from the Moffat tunnel side. Definitely took longer than an hour and a half, but damn that was a gorgeous hike!

From the other side of the passes, hikers and campers have been rescued because they couldn't re-cross creeks from their campsites or trailheads. Best to avoid San Juan high country until there have been a few days without rain. At least if you were thinking of getting off the beaten path.

Got pounded working near Rico today. I also ran black bear yesterday in between storms and there was some rock fall already there.

4 years but CORE got it opened last fall for a minute and its open now to "narrow" trucks only (Mudslide area that closed it 4 years ago. Full sized trucks are banned per Gunnison Ranger District.

No Surprise, Someone reported it very heavily trafficed last Thursday running it.

No clue, just wrote what I found on 2 websites about Tomichi re-opening. Maybe contact Gunnison Ranger District since they are the one over it and "banning Full Sized Trucks".

when i think full size truck, i think old bronco or full size dodge...

but when it comes to narrow shelf roads, our mid-size feels like a damn semi sometimes.

I'm going to have to look into that. I hadn't even heard they were working on it, thought it was just indefinitely closed. I'd be interested in the story of how they got it repaired, particularly given I thought a big obstacle was that the Palisades were 'historic' and couldn't just be fixed in whatever modern fashion.

Oh wait... Well I double fucked that one up. I was apparently thinking of Williams, but even that turnoff is before the Palisades. Don't know how I mixed that up with Tomichi other than I didn't even know that one was closed, I haven't been down there in a while, and it's been a long (day/week/month/past few years).

When I was looking through CORE's Facebook, they had pics of them hand shoveling on Tomichi. CORE is out of BV and they really seem to be making a difference getting closed trails reopened. There is another in the works but since they haven't made anything public on it neither will I.
