Update on the 22 boats that "Swarmed" the capsule off florida...This is a much better angle to see. It has the deck cam shot from the recovery at 0:19 and a an overhead thermal 0:41 that shows the 22 boats in a semi-circle...The live broadcast gave an optical illusion due to zoom that the boats were "Right on top" of the capsule...

Eh, as long as they're not interfering with recovery ops and they're outside the outgas hazard radius...

I actually saw a really bright one this evening sitting in my backyard traveling from East to west. Had a really good tail on it. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen one. :)

That’s a nice, Pollyannish take on it all.

There’s absolutely no chance of a terrorist packing one of those boats with explosives.

No one drinks when they go boating, right?

No such thing as boat rage?

    Accidents, what accidents?

You still need to establish a legal authority to enforce whatever rules are made up.

From the 1958 Convention on the High Seas:

    Article 8
    1. Warships on the high seas have complete immunity from the jurisdiction of any State other than the flag State.

    Establish a perimeter.
    Keep the idiots/potential threats out.
    Problem solved.

Under what authorities? SpaceX isn't a warship, and while the patrol cutter may be, we still need to follow our internal laws. The most you can do is to define 'we consider XYZ to be navigationally unsafe to the other vessel'

    ...

    In other news

Older satellites from the constellations are already starting to deorbit (intentionally)

SpaceX, when carrying NASA astronauts, is a Federal contractor. The NASA astronauts are federal employees.

NASA and the US military have deep roots w the military supporting NASA from it’s inception up to current day.

All sorts of temporary, restrictive access zones pop up all over the country, daily. If temp restrictions are placed on the high seas, then let the standoff begin...

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2020/05/30/behind-scenes-faa-prepares-space-x-launch/

It’ll be interesting when SpaceX flies private or their own astronauts...

Not to mention the UN concept of open seas doesn't really exist. Whatever the rules actually are they don't apply to military vessels. You can't go hang out next to an aircraft carrier in open water, they'll chase you off long before you get anywhere close. I'm sure NASA just didn't want the issue of a confrontation on their first landing especially if shots had to be fired. I mean, we are in the era where getting people to put on a medical mask brings out the threat of violence from the slow folks. I'm sure this will all be dealt with next launch now that NASA can point to the boats in the water from the first landing as a clear safety hazard.

Oh yeah, and my Demo-2 patch came today! As well as my SpaceX decal set from their store.
FYI, if anyone buys that decal kit, I was totally not expecting some of the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Dragon decals to be about 1 square foot in size!!!! Lol. Now where to put them???

    Thanks for the heads up!

They should consider Crowdsourcing for the repairs. Many around the globe have grown up w the telescope being an icon of science and discovery

I’m thinking that’s probably in the works for sure. I’m curious to know what would cause a failure on a 3” diameter cable. I wonder if there’s inspection intervals for a static, non-human load bearing structure.
I would assume there’s a team dedicated to that especially with hurricane repairs and whatnot.
