Hi. Im a new taco owner and I live in the Canadian prairies where it can be extremely cold and get toms of snow. Which is the best tonneau cover? I am thinking of the retromax or extang. I was wondering if the the Retrax pro will freeze up during the winter season. What are your thoughts? Thank you?

Extang worked good, I would avoid retrax. Brother had one and it was a pain in the ass in winter months. Use kijiji and save yourself some cash , got a brand new extang for $600 and I see often on there guys selling the oem toyota tonneau .

Extang Trifecta 2.0. My father in law has had the original version on his F250 for about 8 years that sits outside all year long in NH without any issues.

I can say for sure NOT the Bakflip Revolver X2.....I've got it now, and it's a great tonneau, but it freezes up in the winters here in MN and becomes a permanent lid.

There's a softopper in my future

I have an Extang Solid Fold 2.0. It's been through five Edmonton winters so far and it still functions well and still looks good. The only issue I have with it in the wintertime is that the rubber seals sometimes freeze to the bed rails. I normally just gently pry up the panel at the tailgate until the ice seal is broken (about half an inch) and the problem is solved. I can then open the tailgate to unlatch it and fold it up.

My dad’s got a truxedo roll-up soft cover, frequently -50*F there in the winter. Not sure how well it works in the cold, but it has survived

    ×2 for the trifecta 2.0.

I have one and it works just fine all winter long. They also have a lifetime warranty which is handy. I put a hole in my tarp; entirely my fault, as I left it unlatched while unloading things and the wind caught it and flipped it onto the roof of the truck and the shark fin antenna poked through. They didn't warranted it, but I reached out to extant and they sold me a replacement tarp for cost! Greta customer service.

I also had a bakflip G2 on my old RAM, and it was a pain in the winter. The tailgate and side gaskets would constantly freeze down and it was a real headache getting them unstuck so I could open the tailgate and tonneau. *I had some success putting beeswax down as a barrier to prevent the freezing, but it was still a regular issue as the wax would wear off.

I would go with LOMAX Hard Tri-Fold Cover. These are manufactured in North Dakota, by ACI.... and they can handle harsh winters. I have one..... and it's outstanding.

I have used Truxedo roll up covers for years on my old F150 and it handled the harsh Minnesota winters pretty well. It never collapsed from heavy snow, the top itself never cracked or got tears in it.
But then again when it dipped down below -20 f I never used it because I had damaged my Miata roof when closing it during extreme cold so I am weary of messing with vinyl products below 0 f.
And occasionally during some freezing rain I would have a hard time getting it to lock if I left it open and allowed the locks themselves to get covered in ice. I would think that problem would be universal to all tonneaus though.
It's (relatively) cheap and I got years of daily construction use from it before the velcro sides started to wear out and the locks started to get finicky.

Thank you everyone for all your advice. Im leaning towards the Lomax pro and have the cross bar to haul kayaks during summer. Any thoughts about the Extang having accessories installed like a cross bar or racks?

Are there roof racks and hard cover tonneau options out there in the market?

I am thinking of a set up to something similar or a truck bed rack and a tonneau cover? Any suggestions?

Imo, i'd stay away from anytime of roof rack the mounts on the bed rails...at least the dealer gave me a warning on them. I've had the toyota tonneau cover on my truck for a few months now...its already been through a tropical and 2 hail storms...so far i like it. Only had a tiny bit of water get by on one side and the very rear considering all the heavy wind driven rain we had. Down here in southern new england we have more to worry with ultraviolet rays and heat from the sun on those tonneau covers. Dealer even supplied me with a bottle of wolfstein to protect the cover.

Member whoispurplegoo has a set up similar to what you are looking for. See post #17 here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-are-you-doing-for-a-kayak-rack.612271/

I have the factory tonneau and its worked fine for SE Wisconsin winters. I try not to open it much if it has ice on it.

I also have the Rola Haul-Your-Mite rack and modified the mounts to go over the factory tonneau mounting. I swap between them seasonally.
