low rpm/high gear ping is incredibly common for these trucks especially if you have a manual trans. The key (in my experience) is to keep RPMs at 2500 or above if you're in boost. If you shift too early and the RPMs dip below 2500 and you mash the throttle...ping city.

Also I have the 7th injector kit installed which helps but mostly for higher RPM when it actually kicks in.

And of course make sure you're using 91 octane gas. Elevation and outside air temperature play a big role in ping too. Unless you're up in the mountains in CA, chances are you're at a relatively low elevation and it's hot as hell out here this time of year.

Heat is the enemy of performance and these superchargers get heat soaked easily

    3 options for ping:

change how you drive- stay away from situations where it pings
7th injector kit/methanol kit, which should fix it
aem fic6, very tricky to get working but is the closest thing to tuning that you can do. allows you to retard timing in problem areas and get rid of ping

So that was a fun ride, finally finished my head gasket. Got the heads machined and valves done. Put it all together and only forgot the coolant temp sensor for the gauge cluster. Afr gauge installed as well and afr's are ~12 at WOT (everywhere else is trying for 14.7). Couldn't be happier and she runs like a top. Round hole throttle body gasket added about 1 psi too. Only took about 2 months :D. Not pinging either, though elevation might be helping with that. Now onto the next part of the ever going project... aem fic6!

AFR gauge installed with grab handle still usable.
    FF1EC1CE-C2B8-4DB0-B5B0-783B8543B276.jpg
Bare block once I got the heads and everything else off.

All finished, got a bath too!

Nice job on the truck. No fuel mods ?

I drove around a few times. I if I’m super easy in the throttle no ping even in boost. But who wants to drive like that. Plus there are many situations where that is not possible.

I also checked the RPM. At 65 mph , rpms are approx 2050.

Question - is there a way to drive with out the super charger boost while it’s installed ? Take off the belt - and........

I want to see if the SC extra power is worth the hassle.

You can't run it without the belt. You can run it were it wont boost with a few mods. I have mine setup when I set my PSB1 boost gauge to valet mode it holds the boost vacuum controller open. It will not make any boost this way. I use a 3 port MAC vacuum switching valve, vacuum reservoir canister, a vacuum check valve and a relay. You could do it with just a switch instead of the PSB1 boost gauge and relay.. The switch will control the MAC 3 port vacuum valve.

Some Tacoma's have the vacuum res in the drivers fender well in the front. I added one to mine off of an older Tacoma.

Technically you can run the supercharger without a belt on for emergency reasons,
if your belt were to snap you would be able to still drive the truck.
My supercharger bearing went out on me and I had to cut my supercharger belt off.
I was about 70 miles from home and it made it going the speed limit.
But I understand what your saying, correct, you can’t.
I’m not sure why you would not want boost tho or to bypass it.

I set mine up for valet mode for that reason valet parking. Also if the wife forgets and puts regular unleaded in,I can bypass it until I run some fuel out or get some octane booster and trips to Mexico. There octane is not very high.

I’ve frequently thought about what to do when I got to Baja with low octane gas once my supercharger comes back from rebuild some day.

I’ll have to look into this some more.

There are legitimate octane boosters you can buy, not like the crap gas stations and auto parts stores sell. Torco is one brand that comes to mind. Not exactly cheap but probably work well for those situations where low grade/low octane is all you can get

I only go about once every 2 years.
Looks like it would be around $45 per fill up (I have 2 gas tanks) Which, on a long trip will add up. However, it's still a good alternative. And I only go there every 2 years or so.

Amazing what 171' above sea level will do.
Normally I'm in the 5's. Seen 6.0lbs once.
Today in Yuma Az 118 degrees 171' above sea level. Stock pulley.

With temperatures at 118 degrees you can actually play around with different larger size nozzles to cool
    the supercharger and intake temperatures.

You could spray just water if you wanted to with up to a size 6 nozzle.
You would get more boost and much lower intake temps this way too when dealing with 118 temperatures

I’m looking into the 2.5 snow performance Over the 7th kit and DT headers right now, But I’ve been wondering how well the aluminum crankshaft pulley works out for you. I’d love to know when you’ve got it all dialed in.

It’ll be quite a while, supercharger just arrived at The High Speed Lab for a rebuild and some other goodies, 12 week estimated turn around lol. BUT I’ll certainly chime in once I get everything dialed in
