Cooling issues? Not anymore

hey guys. Wanted to show you what we are working on. We got a spal 830w 18in fan setup and are working on custom brackets to hold it in the factory shroud hole. This will be run by a controller unit with customer set 40% start command temp. And 100% command temp along with user override on command. This fan is the most powerful pwm fan in existence and will fix all cooling issues on 2nd and 3rd gen tacomas. This will also free up horsepower and torque through the curve and more mpgs. With temps around 115 here I'm pretty tired of my truck running hot and the AC not working for crap.

 

Curious as to what situations people are running into cooling issues? So far I haven’t had cooling issues with 95F uphill off-road switchbacks. 2 year old truck may be the reason though?

 

Interested depending on how PnP / how much splicing will be required for the wiring.

 

Canyon traffic to the UT ski resorts in winter. Overheated my buddy's chevy because we moved 100 ft in 2 hours. Everyone had FOMO for a big powder day.

Also, sitting in the 100+ degree desert staffing offroad races.

 

Idling in traffic with A/C seems to be the marginal case - low engine rpm means low clutch fan speed, and no natural airflow through the condenser.

 

all of these are issues and add altitude and thin air that take even more out of what the air can take from the rad. more = better. the harness will come pre terminated with instructions.

Definitely looking forward to this. It has been 110-115 on a regular basis where I live and getting ahead of any future overheating issues will be nice.

 

Looks like a neat kit but I’m curious if anyone who has experienced overheating issues has tried upgrading to a larger radiator? I recently chased an overheating condition on a project vehicle which was cured by upgrading from a two-row radiator with plastic tanks to an aluminum four-row radiator.

 

definitely intrigued. In Fla in the summer my AC is constantly on full. Thinking some better air flow across the condenser wouldn't be a bad thing. I like the idea of using the factory shroud, but there is more to cooling than just a fan that spins faster. How much R&D are you all putting into this?

 

that only works so long. this will work on all scenarios. low speed, high altitude and in the heat.

 

Note for those of you in warranty and want a electric cooling fan, just go to the dealer and give them this TSB, tell them you are having poor AC while idling and in traffic and they have to perform the TSB (they do not need to confirm your issue to do the TSB)

well the unit im using is a OEM validated fan. the controller is from lingenfelter and is epoxy filled. i will be running it on my truck. and im an ex engineer for chevy performance who fixed the corvette overheating issues. prob not going to get that level of knowledge from any other aftermarket parts

 

ya no offense to toyota but thats trash. 1 its a pusher fan blocks air flow. 2 its a small fan, 3 its not a variable speed PWM fan. and its a huge splice in job.

 

When city driving / stop and go I can run pretty hot. Plus I start my truck every day before work. I want that bitch at 37*.

 

Yes it is, but while under warranty its a good deal. Plus its covered under the rest of your warranty. I had it done the other week, I redid most of the wiring they did so its less hacky. I do intend to build a duct to channel the air a little better too.

I think replacing the engine driven fan has some positives as you pointed out (throttle response, slight bump in power, slight bump in MPG)

EDIT: also, Im from MN, it gets over 90 degrees like 10 times a year, the rest of the time is in the 70s or below zero.

 

personally I would be leary of an electric fan stopping for some reason. All it takes is a wire getting chaffed or broken, switch goes bad, etc.

I’m not trying to argue about the merits of your new product, just stating that from a reliability stand point I’d be concerned about what happens if the fan stops. I run dual-electric fans on previously-mentioned project vehicle but it’s very obvious when my fans are on in that vehicle.
