I was up there yesterday evening. The USFS has tremendously improved the road. Appears they may still be working on it so it could possibly be closed while work is being done. They pretty much used ballast stone to smooth out the very bad places. I would, maybe, but probably not drive my wife's RAV 4 around there now. Bushes are still overgrown, it's not as technical 4x4 wise as it once was, but there is still access as there should be. I encourage all to try it out!!!

Thanks for the update! Did you run into, or hopefully just crossed paths with, any hikers? Am I remembering correctly that the road ends at the gap before Shining Rock?

It does end where you take off to shining rock. I just walked it for about a half mile to see what they had worked on. I passed a few hikers. Most get out of the way, some are reluctant but eventually move to the side.

My buddies kid just bought a 3rd gen 4Runner (he’s 16) I gave him the 5 spoke 4Runner rims and he’s cleaning these up and looking to sell them. Anyone interested?

That kind of sucks. I may go up there tomorrow around 1pm I imagine foot traffic will be pretty high though. Is there any other roads that are like this on the parkway or anywhere in the National Forest? I’ve driven I THINK everything off 276 in Brevard. Nothing has been rough enough to need 4x4. I’m going on the next Hurricane Creek group ride I see

I am in the same boat. Need to talk and get some suggestions for a new lift set up. I just found Asheville Vehicle Outfitters in Fletcher on Google Maps. Might check them out today. Talked to a guy from Diamondback 4x4 in Swannanoa yesterday but wasn't really helpful....heard great things about Rides of Conover but that's a haul..

I’ve been to Diamondback. I wouldn’t go back. They welded my rock sliders on (took them two days) and my drivers side rubbed on the rock slider at full lock. I had to fix them at work. The welds they left we’re all splatter which I could of done myself. There was another guy in Hendersonville OGRE off-road. They installed my All-Pro leaf springs. Good guy, no complaints and I just went by AVO the other day while I was in Asheville and discussed a dual battery setup with them. They would be my “go to’s” from here on out. Looking forward to doing business with them. Their new shop is awesome!

So I went I AVO first and talked to a younger guy who displays his cement color Tacoma in front of their new shop. Nice ride I must say and I was pleasantly surprised that this young dude knew his shit. They do lean towards OME lifts and particularly airbags for rear lift adjustment. But he did certainly answer in professional manner all my questions.
Then I went to Diamondback 4x4 and I wasn't proven wrong after I had a phone conversation with them the other day. Not even looking at my truck, just sitting behind the desk and trying to find components HE likes. Again going for airbags for the rear, no other suggestion etc. Quite frankly, AVO gave me enough confidence to go there for a lift, cmc or any other mods.

Whoever said it was over grown wasn’t over exaggerating probably a mile worth of driving of hearing constant nails on a chalkboard while trying to dodge rocks from giving you some nice new rock rash on your lips. Pretty impressed with how I’m running 295/70r17s with very little trimming and barely got any rubbing

Hello! - Figured this would be the place to ask:

I am online shopping for a vehicle that has been in Asheville, NC all its short life (2018). Would you guys know if NC uses salt on their roads in winters?

I have no idea if NC even gets that much snow to warrant the use of salt - thoughts from the NCers?

Obviously, I am doing my due diligence like checking the undercarriage for rust, etc. Just wanted to know as reference if they used salt or not to the point where it destroys undercarriages in the long run.

    Thanks!

My in-laws are just North of Asheville and talk about the slag on their vehicles in the winter. Not sure if slag and salt are the same, so i guess that is a FWIW comment.
