Rock Slider DIY rattlecan Q

Hiya bois, tackling a small project of rattle canning my new rock sliders.

I’ve come up with a doubt and it’s really stressin me.

I tried my big hardest to prep the sliders and make sure theres not rust on it but after rattling primer cans for the first coat, I’m getting small rust in between the metal (file attached)

what gives? Should I jump ship and have this powder coated or just bro thru it?

 

Try and get a wire wheel in that area to get the surface rust off and then shoot your primer again. I’d try to get a good coat of the primer in those corners. Easier to do now than chasing down rust later.

 

Dont stress
Just carry on. You cant get rust out from the cracks well, so need to go chemical on them.


I would apply rust converter to to that area, really get it deep into the crack... and if you get runs, oh well, wipe them off if you care.

Probably can do a quick primer over the rust converter (if you want, but probably a good idea)

Then I would topcoat with

I am really happy with how that spray rustoleum bed liner turned out on my sliders,

I stuck some 3m traction tape down as last step, along the edge, but dont put it where your leg will rub it

 

put the paint on thicker and move on. Its a slider its going to rust. Powder coating sliders it pointless unless its a mall cruiser.

 

I'd use a wire wheel them phosphoric acid. Maybe por15 those spots before paint. Rust under paint will continue to rust. That Rust-Oleum rust reformer is ok, I use it on my frame constantly, but it's not as good as a real rust reformer chemical. The tops won't get beat up like the bottoms. Honestly, I'd personally clean that up and weld the whole seam and flap disc smooth. You can't weld that whole seam at once or it will warp. If you live where there's winter, they will be bad if salt can get in there.
